The very first time I injected it was straight from the fridge and it hurt like heck.
Since that time I have always kept my Victoza in the cupboard once opened. I have been reading that people think it is more effective kept in the fridge.
Opinions... Pain factor... Maybe it was due to inexperience. I have a new pen and am considering giving it another go.

Curious, I always keep mine in the fridge, because like you I read some people thought it lost potency over time if kept at room temp. I feel nothing beyond the prick of the needle. I'm interested in the experience of others. Perhaps a second experiment is in order.
The instructions that came with my pen said to keep it out of the fridge once opened, and the pen can be used for 30 days. After that, dispose of the pen, even if there is still medication in it. I've only injected my insulin cold, and, like you, it hurt like the dickens. I've never done it again. I've not heard that victoza loses effectiveness if kept at room temp.
I only inject it from the fridge when I open a new pen. once it is open I do not put them in the fridge. But that first injection has some discomfort, also every once in awhile when I inject I do feel pain, not sure if I am hitting an old injection spot or just something in my body didn't like that injection.
Chris, you might be holding the needle at an angle. I find that if the needle goes in at a slant, I feel pain, but if it is straight, I don't. Hope this helps.
I haven't noticed either way -- the only time I get burning is when I haven't dried the alcohol from the alcohol pad. I found that using the alcohol softens my skin on my belly and then I don't even feel the needle.
