Frustrated with new Levemir. help!

I had a check up and labs and my kidney function tests were elevate. I had been on metformin 1000 twice a day with hybrids 5 and a sliding scale insulin. Dr felt I needed to come off the pills because of kidney disease.so he started m e on levemir 12u. Well, my vs have been between 150 and 300 every day for this week. I also gained 3 pounds! U worked so hard from Feb till now to lose 50. I still need to lose 30 more. I called today to get the d o as increased but no one called me back.
I eat a low carb diet as my program and less than 1200 Calif I as . Am I doomed t o fail now?
My a1c was 10 but my fasting was 111 on the lab. Now I haven't has less than 160 I just don't get it.

I am a T2 on insulin. Insulin works, but you need to adjust it to the proper dose. And 12 U for a T2 is probably not enough to give you a normal fasting blood sugar. I decided early on that I was going on insulin and that I basically was going to have to learn to do it myself. I found two books really helpful, "Using Insulin" by Walsh and "Think Like a Pancreas" by Scheiner. Most people do best moving to a full basal/bolus regime where you dose your mealtime insulin in proportion to the carbs in your meals (as opposed to a sliding scale). Done properly, a basal/bolus regime should really improve your blood sugar control and help you lose weight. Having high blood sugars and using insulin can cause you to lose weight. So get those books and work more aggressively with your doctor (and maybe your diabetes educator) to get your insulin regime all tightened up.

I'm also a T2 on insulin, I use a pump now but I was on Levemir with Novolog before. Getting the right dose takes some time with insulin. I was started on a low dose of Levemir which was not nearly enough we(doctor and I) kept raising it. We eventually added Novolog to the mix

Weight gain is not necessarily a given with insulin. I managed to lose 30 to 40 pounds after I started. Finding the right basal and bolus rates is the key. Long acting basal insulin's such as Levemir should help maintain a level BG when you are not eating with short acting bolus insulin added before meals to cover the carbs from that meal. Finding the correct insulin to carb ration for the carbs you eat will help avoid highs and lows.

You are doing great, fifty pounds lost is impressive, insulin just has a learning curve. I would recommend you see an Endocrinologist if you aren't already. Most regular doctors are just not that knowledgeable on how to dose insulin.

Thank. You for your input. Today was better from fans of 150 to the highest 175' stilla ways t o g o but no200s. Thank God .
