Gastroparesis: I need some new ideas

After two years with this complication my symptoms are making it hard to get even on meal in the day(I have almost all of them . dx'd with type 1 - 28 years ago. I'm 31.) .

It's getting more and more severe. I'm throwing up almost every day and trying to just live off of my yogurt smoothies. OK OK no I don't want tmy dr's to know the entire truth of the severity because I dont' want them putting a feeding tube in. My husband takes care of me since I lost my vision and ended up in a wheelchair from falling down my stairs. He even has to put in my insulin pump and I can't even begin to list, that a feeding tube would be one more thing.

I am running in the 200's which I don't like, but at the same time when I can't keep food down, I fear going down because I won't be able to keep my juice down.

I'm scared, very scared and I don't think the reglan and protonix is doing it. I need more ideas. My GI DR suggested some canadian medication but get real. I'm on disability and can't afforde to pay out of pocket for a med in canada!

Can someone even offer a kind word that "I have that same problem" just so I know I'm not alone.

I use medical marijuana to ease pain, but I want the help with my vnausea but for some reason it doesn't help that. I need some way to make it helpful. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. LOL!

I'm hoping to find support here. My endroconologist gave me the link to this website a long time ago but I have never posted. Thank you for letting me have some space.

Wish I had some ideas to offer. I have gastroparesis, but not as severe as yours. I feel queasy after I eat & sometines have minor shooting pain (briefly), but the vomiting hasn’t effected me–yet. Of course, I have crazed BG because of the unpredictability we deal with never knowing when food will hit.

I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. Understand where you’re coming from about a feeding tube. I’d give it a try, though. You’ve got to get more nutrition.

Wish there was a way for your GI doc to get you some free samples of the Canadian drug.

Sending you a big hug.

Thank you. I appreciate any response at all. I’m going through a very deep depression and they’re dropping my therapy (I just started) down to every other week. I went in yesterday to ask for twice a week and found that out.

It seems the pedialyte sips were successful so far tonight. I’m tired and would like to sleeep unusual since I’m usually up til 7am with worry.

I’m so scared I’m going to die @ 50. I just love my fiance’. Really he’s my husband. We just can’t marry cuz I dont’ have $ to sponsor him for his green card. He’s Canadian but we’ve been together 5 yrs. He is so loving, but we are falling apart because of him taking care of me and me not having any emotional resources left to be there for him.

I have heart disease, microalbumineria, legally blind, and severe neuopathy, plus other stuff non diabetes related, long list of things to add but i won’t… I’m having memory loss which my pcp says is from the diabetes but I am convinced its stressed because when I’m calm I remember things just fine.

Do you notice certain triggers for your grastro?

I had tried moving to six meals a day before but that only helped for so long before it became on meal a day that I could even stand to eat and then smoothies. My nurse knows I 'm sipping smoothies and she thinks I’m still okay. I really don’t want a feeding tube.

See, I have severe chronic pain. There is NO pain med that works for me. We’ve tried every opiate and the snail venom pain reliever won’t work either. A pain pump was looked at going in my spinal cord. (I have a brokien back). I don’t want more pain from another tube.

I just want to be happy that’s all. I want to live a happy life with my loving husband. He doesn’t deserve all of this. He didn’t raise his hand for this assignment.

Thank you for listening. It’s nice to talk about this.

You’ve got every right to be depressed. You’re dealing with so much.

Stress effects my memory also. My endo says many diabetics have bad short-term memory.

Any chance you could move to Canada? Your fiance is a good man.

Do feeding tubes cause pain?

Haven’t noticed any particular triggers. Dinner is the worst. My doc said it’s fine to skip dinner, but I can never eat enough for lunch & often skip lunch. I’d hate to not have dinner with my husband. I tried liquid meals for a week. Protein shakes & soup. It didn’t make any difference, so I went back to solid food avoiding high fiber & raw. I eat very slowly, chew, chew, chew. When I start feeling queasy, I stop eating. If I feel stressed & hurried, I eat very little. Don’t know if it’s my head or my stomach:)

Noticed you live in SF. Maybe you could look into acupuncture schools. You might be able to get free treatments from students. Acupuncture helps tremendously with pain.

Dr Bernstein in his book (Diabetes Solutions) suggests a couple of things.

One which you could check with your doctor is a ‘nitric oxide’ drink (isosorbide) I think.
This is basically ‘viagra’ for the stomach (to help it empty!! ). Seriously.

He also suggests a form of yoga exercise (tummy tucks, breathing in and out, tightening the abs etc,…many times, a hundred or so - to help empty the stomach.

You could always try emailing him about the nitric oxide drink…

I’m sorry to hear about your difficulty. I suffer from similar condition, but it is probably medication related. Here are some suggestions.

  1. Keep a log and try to relate you worst symptoms to particular foods, see if eliminating/reducing those foods help.

  2. Try digestive supplements, papaya enzyme, betadine HcL with pepsin, vinegar, activated charcoal, swedish bitter (or other bitters), ginger, etc…

  3. Try increasing your hydration.

  4. Try exercising (somehow) after eating, crunches, or the one michael suggests.

  5. Get checked for thyroid problems, Dr. B suggests this can actually cause vagus nerve problems.

  6. Chew gum after eating.

  7. See if eliminating fiber helps (it sounds like you have tried eliminating protein and meat).

Hope that is helpful. We all feel for the troubles you are going through.
