Getting a new iPhone? Use a Dexcom G5? Read this

Hi all! It’s phone update time again for many. Me included.

I updated my iPhone this week and ran into an issue with the Dexcom G5 app you might want to know about. I got one of the older 6s Plus phones, kinda upset at Apple over the audio jack, but that’s another discussion…

If you also get a new phone, and I believe this applies to Android too, be sure to clear the serial number out of the app in your old phone, and even uninstall/delete the app from the old phone. Back it up at that point if you are transferring everything to the new phone. That way the app doesn’t transfer with this info. This is needed to clear the info so it may be paired with a new phone. Once you have your new phone going 100%, install the app at that point and you should be able to enter then serial number and pair it with no problems. Well, maybe, but the good folks at Dexcom support will help out if it still doesn’t pair. The error that shows is “We are experiencing a temporary issue with the Dexcom server. Please try again later” If you see this error, your transmitter is still paired to the old phone, and might require Dexcom Support to fix that.

G5 doesn’t have an app for any Android phone yet so it wouldn’t apply to the Android phones. I just found out about the Clarity app for my home computer which I am now using, though. Glad I found out about it because I did NOT want to swap to the iPhone (not a fan). :smiley:

There is an xdrip beta app for Android phones and G5. It works pretty good.

Has anybody of you noticed that the communication between G5 and the iPhone gets lost if the iphone is connected to the car over bluetooth and used for e.g. skype or a phone call?

I’ve never had that issue and I use BT in the car every day.

I havent tried it but I do notice right after updating to IOS 10 that I have had my first signal loss on my G5. I never had this issue once before upgrading and this makes me furious. I should have known better than to upgrade. Off to search for a fix.

Been on iOS 10 since Tuesday and haven’t had a dropout yet.

Do you start to get signal loss when on your second week of sensor life? Maybe it’s just a coincidence but it’s been so rock solid all this time. Kinda makes me see the downfall of having the phone as a primary receiver since that adds another level of unknown to it.

Don’t have stronger/weaker signal no matter what week I’m on a sensor. Probably just coincidence but I understand your concern. Remember, you can lose signal with the receiver as well.

I have. And I’ve always wondered if anyone else has. I have a really nice Jabra BT speaker etc. i keep on my visor in the car. Since I’ve switched to G5 serveral months ago, I’ve noticed signal loss on my phone and troubles with the Jabra. I’ve stopped using the Jabra until I can find out what’s going on.

Never had that issue. I’m connected to other bluetooth devices a lot including wireless headphones. I also use Skype and FaceTime and other apps a lot but no issues like that. I would call Dexcom’s troubleshooting department and them about what’s going on. I won’t 1)upgrade to iOS 10 because of the issues its having and 2)don’t have room on my phone and 3)getting a new iPhone here soon.

Same as the others: BT in the car, no problem with Dexcom. BUT I will say that too many BT connections can be a problem for any device. The explanation gets very jargony very fast but basically things can get bounced. Theoretically the limit is (I believe) seven, but there seem to be a lot of complicating factors that can make it less than that.

In my discussions with a Dexcom tech support person about this they were ruing the fact that there’s no way to specify a priority list, as in “Whatever else you do don’t disconnect THIS device!”

I see no way to clear the serial number out of my old phone or unpair
it. Should I just delete the app then back up? I dont want to lose my
data though.

There is indeed an app, from the hacker DOC community. It’s called xdrip (there is an even more function-rich version called xdrip+) that I just installed, and started a new thread about it.

There are several people here using it – myself, Thas, Jim26, undoubtedly others.

Because the community is not constrained by FDA approval, there’s a bunch of neat features for things like projecting BG after accounting for insulin and carb input, and a bunch of other stuff.

I’m having a gas with it!

Besides ending sensor session and deleting app on iphone is there anything else I should do on my old iphone before putting it on to the new one?

Thought: I wonder how Dexcom implemented the records of transmitters that have been used with the app on iPhone? If they used the iOS built-in database or file storage mechanisms, uninstalling and reinstalling the app might clear this record, and allow a transmitter to be used after the 3 month expiration.

I’m not familiar with iOS, however it’s almost certain to have similar software subsystems as Android, which I am familiar with. If the DB framework is used, then what I posit above would work.

My daughter accidentally(?) dropped her iPhone down the stairs last night and shattered the screen. Also, her iPhone had started losing its charge very quickly and it had been taking for-evah to recharge (even on airplane mode). She uses a Dexcom G5 :heart:️with Bluetooth and Share, sometimes uses an AW, never uses the Dexcom receiver. I don’t know where the receiver is; the cats could have eaten it for all I know.

No pressure here, but I’m getting her a new iPhone later this afternoon. Any recommendations about which flavor iPhone I should purchase?

Go for the 7. I have the 7 with 256 GB, the battery is MUCH better than the one in 6s. It takes longer to charge as well, though.

I got her the 7. She loves it. I’m jealous.
