Glucosamine and Diabetes

I won't go into detail now, but I think that glucosamine is making my blood sugar go higher. If you had to make a choice between taking glucosamine and having to watch what you eat or stop taking it and take more pain meds, what would your choice be?

Is the glucosamine that you are taking in pill form? drink? or chewables? If chewable and/or drink form, those tend to be loaded with sugar as a binder and to make the taste not so bad. If pill form, check the inactive ingredients too, sometimes they put sugar in the capsules. Otherwise, if none of that is the case, you might want consult a doc about it. Everybody is different when it comes to supplements. I'd be watching what I eat so I could continue taking it, over the pain meds.

I have been a diabetic since 1996, on insulin since 2002, and have been taking glucosamine at least that long and see no affect on my numbers!

I can’t say definately that is the cause so I am going to experiment in the next several months to see what happens. In the scenario I gave only two choices, I forgot there could be a third - finding somethng to replace the glucosamine. I know some people have had good results with sour cherry juice or capsules. It’s certaily worth a try.

What made me ask this question is that I was taking 4500 mg that came in a gelatin capsule. Not checking, I just picked up a bottle at Walmart of the tablets because they didn’t have the capsules. I took the same number of tablets, just didn’t realze that they were 1000 mg instead of 1500 mg. I began to notice that my back was hurting more, then my knees, and then my neck. I thought it was just the difference betweem the powdered form and the pressed tablet form. Finally my brain kicked in and I checked the dosage. I was only taking 3000 mg instead of 4500 mg. I also noticed prior to this discovery that my fasting bg was lower than it has been in a long time, and that sometimes my bg before supper was surprisingly low 110. And, I had been eating thigs like candy that I don’t normally eat.

So, will do some experimenting and see what happens.
