I’ve only had my CGM for just over 24 hours now! I’m going snorkeling next month and would really like to keep it with me while swimming. Is there any way of waterproofing this thing!? Or do I just keep it in the boat and not worry about losing connection. I’m a little worried about working hard, swimming in the middle of the ocean and not being able to take advantage of this new gizmo! (kind of the point of having it)
Any suggestions?
The monitor is not waterproof, I believe, so you need to keep that on the boat in a drybag. The sensor, when I go swimming/diving/etc. should be ok. I like to cover it with (believe it or not) Plastic wrap, the kind that adheres to anything. I think its made by Glad. Eventually comes off, fairly easily, so I just put another one on.
Isn’t the sensor rated for 30 minutes at 3 ft? I imagine that water pressure at deeper depths would have an affect on the rating?
barb,
Try two sheets of IV3000 dressing or similar to keep the transmitter dry. The reciever can go in a dive bag (dry bag) similar to what lifeguards use to keep their two way radios dry. Two layers of plastic sealed one over the other should work well.

I just looked at a water tight box that I thought might hold the monitor. Hang it off my neck and actually take it into the water with me?
I just got back from Maui and went snorkeling. I left the receiver in the boat. My strategy was head out of the boat with BG at an acceptable and stable level, and not worry about it for 30-40 minutes or so in the water. Had a great time…I didn’t do anything special with the transmitter…business as usual.
Yea, thinking that’s what I might do. I managed for 36 years without one, what’s 40 minutes.
I just returned from Grand Cayman, lots of snorkeling. No problems with my Dexcom, I just left the sensor in the room for the afternoon and swam without any concerns. It just takes about 5-10 minutes for the monitor to start communicating again once you get in proximity to it. I’ve had my Dexcom for 2 months, and get it wet daily without any problems. I haven’t found a need to cover it, wether I’m in the tub, the pool, or the ocean. Have fun, and only take the monitor in the boat if you are positive you won’t get it wet or drop it in the water
I’m getting an aquapac that some have suggested to put the receiver in. It’s guaranteed 100% waterproof. It’s on a lanyard and thought I could just put it around my neck or even stuff it into my suit!
