Hair loss?

For about the last 2 weeks my hair has been falling out in really big clumps. Not to the point of bald spots, but it has gotten equally thin everywhere. Is this a side effect other people have? Or is it completely unrelated?

My 23 YO T1 daughter has the same problem. She was dx 1 month ago but we believe it is a symptom of her lupus and not diabetes. The diabetes has caused a lupus flare up.

Hair loss can also be caused by low thyroid. I remember once being in the checkout line at a super market, got up to the cashier who looked at me and shouted, "Your hair is falling out!".

You were just diagnosed. Your body has gone through a trauma. It is not uncommon to suffer hair loss after something like you have gone through. Your body suffered terribly high blood sugars, you probably spent a bunch of time sick with emerging DKA. Your blog says you lost 20 lbs. Hair loss after weight loss also happens.

Your hair normally rotates through going dormant and rest before restarting growth. When a follicle restarts growing hair, the old hair falls out and a new one starts. Basically, during the time your body starved, it stopped your dormant hair follicles from restarting in order to conserve energy for more important stuff (I know your hair is important to you). Then when you got back to not being in DKA and starving, your body restarted all your hair follicles that had been dormant. And when they restarted, the dropped the old hair and started a new hair and you have hair loss.

I'm not saying this is what happened to you, but it is an explanation. I would still talk with your doctor about it.

I had the same thing. Endo determined it was low thyroid. He rx me a thyroid pil and seemed immediately it stopped falling out. I have read that type 1 and low throid often go together.

My hair was falling out at one time, every time I washed it I would have it come out by the handfuls. I went to the Dr and they couldn't find a valid reason. I started taking vitamins and supplements and it has since stopped. Vitamin D was a big factor or should I say a lack of... I also take iron as well. if you are interested I can give you a list of what I take.

My hair fell out too and the hair that didn’t looked terrible. Don’t worry. It comes back and mine is just as think as it used to be before I got sick. Hang in there.
