Happy Birthday to Justice Sotomayor

10 fun facts about Justice Sotomayor from Latina Magazine

I was amused by the fact that they listed being type 1 was a "fun" fact.

I just listened to her book. I really enjoyed it. Although many of us might look to the book as a story of her overcoming diabetes, diabetes actually was a small part of her story. I got the feeling that her diabetes was just something she dealt with and that she was "lucky." For so many years, she just took one shot a day and she never had really bad hypos and it was just a private aspect of her life. The real story was her climb out of the barrio against many economic and prejudicial obstacles to become a supreme court judge. She is proud to be a role model to others with diabetes and she says this in her book.

And just to nitpick, fact number 5 misses a key point:

5. She’s a lover (as well as a fighter).

She officiated one of her ex-aides’ marriage in a civil ceremony in 2009. So cute!

According to the book, her first act after becoming a judge was to officiate at her mothers marriage to her step father Omar.

I really enjoyed her book, "My Beloved World.," which I read on my Kindle. I lived in the Bronx for a while, and her story certainly rang true to me. She was a spunky kid, handling both the Bronx and Type 1, and is now an excellent writer.

Diabetes Forecast just published this interview Sonia Sotomayor: Her Life With Diabetes.

It's an encouraging, quick read.
