Have you ever used your diabetes as an excuse to get out of doing something you didn't want to do?

Well put, Gary.

just eating out when i wasnt sure about the fare. im sure i will use it in the future for some better stuff. my nurse wheni was first diagnosed TOLD me to use it, that i might as well get something good out of diabetes, like skiving work meetings and stuff, which i thought was hysterical. she is a bit mental, tho...

I used it when I couldn't keep up with my friends drinking, I would say, ah its just the D, they hadn't a clue. I used it at school, Chemistry no doubt.

Zoe if you end up in prison, we will all visit.

I took my pump and meter into a courtroom when I went to watch a trial for a case @ work. It was no big deal.

Thank you, Josephine, that's very kind of you! I'd like to think things like Americans with Disability Act push a button with even power mad courtroom guards, but I live in a Third World County, so one never knows. Glad to hear acidrock went into a court room with no problem, though I was kind of hoping it would get me out of the jury duty!

I've been rethinking this topic. I seldom use diabetes as an "excuse" (ie pretext) to get out of stuff. But taking care of my diabetes does lead me to prioritize. So when something is requested of me that gets in the way of my diet/exercise/sleep routine, I think carefully and often say no.
Saying no to stuff is fine. I'm happier & healthier as I put my health first.

I would have liked to respond to this thread, but I am diabetic and I therefore I can't muster the energy to do it.

I think there's a very real danger if the jury pool does not include diabetics, and some important court case came up that impacted diabetics.

Imagine if the jury pool didn't include African-Americans because they felt unwelcome there.

I have been in depositions AND courtrooms a lot in the past few years (both jury duty and more commonly, testifying) and never had a problem with bg meters. Maybe it's a good thing that my bg meter does not look a cellphone, because they always lock up cellphones at the entrance. They just ask me to make sure that my bg meter isn't a cellphone :-). Maybe others are not so lucky. I remember back in the 90's, when bg meters and cellphones were much larger, that I did get seriously hassled about bg meters a few times outside the courtroom.

Yes esp since a lot of the pump companies want to use Iphones as pump controllers.
The omnipod has something that looks like a phone already.

I went to fight a ticket in a muni court last year and I was told I would have to remove my pump and leave it with him!!!. I told him that if I did that it would no longer be sterile and there is no way I'm leaving my pump with him.

He brought a supervisor over and after about 15 min, the transferred me to another court to hear my case " one that allows insulin pumps " LMAO.

I suppose they must have had this happen before, but really odd behaviour, I think. In any case the officer that gave me the ticket did not show up for the trial and I won in default. I bet he didn't expect it to be in the alternate courthouse. SO in the end it worked to my advantage.

nice tim! niiiice!

Yep....My BG is 300 I can't go to dinner or my BG is 180 and climbing I really should not go to "that" movie , can I bring food and syringes into the court room...nope your excused!

I like to win so if the Bete's opens a few doors for me....good...but I'm not going to lie about it and I never want to place any extra burden on someone else (well maybe my competitors, or enemies) , I will never dodge my responsibility's. I would guess that most anyone that's married has played the "D" card for something...;-)

The only time I "use" it is to try and get seated next to my husband on a flight. It usually works! But we've wondered if they allow diabetics to sit in the exit rows... think I'll do a google.

You might want to avoid posting your "purjury", it can cause you real trouble, especially with your last name being attached as well. Baaaaaaaad idea.

Sorry, I've never done any of that stuff, not ever.
If I'm sick, I am. Its never pretend.

I first posted to this topic, "no way"; I would never use my diabetes as an excuse. And this is relevant for me as I have jury duty next week. But then someone else said they don't use it as an excuse, but as a reason. As I've been thinking about jury duty I realize that I might have a problem getting in with my pump and my meter (which I will NOT remove). I also dread the thought of being dependent on someone else for lunch as I'm also a vegetarian. I also worry about how it would be if I feel the need to test during the trial. Bottom Line, I really hope they will excuse me for valid reasons.

I have thought of the same issues with jury duty. I would have no problem asking for special consideration from the court for maintaining my D. Faced with special requests most judges will probally recuse you.

I might suggest a letter for the judge explaining you willingness to serve but then explain all your reservations about the things you have listed.

I would then show up with my pump in full view and maybe a little extra tubing hanging out for dramatic effect.

Like I said earlier it would not be an excuse but rather a reason.

Gary

Or, if the judge won't let you out, there'd probably be a chance one of the parties in the case would blow a strike on you, given the chance that you'd pollute the jury with opinions about insurance companies and medical procedures!

hahahaha!

all the time. but now people are on to me and my manipulative ways. i no longer have much cretability. its like the boy who cried wolf.

Yeah, But I'll bet it was fun getting to this point.
