Any one have experience or an explanation as to why blood sugars would reach exeedingly high numbers despite multiple correction doses??
For example, my blood sugar before lunch was 150 and I had half a chicken sandwich, @ 18 carbs. I dosed 4.5 units (1 unit for the correction, 2 units for the food and and extra unit because it usually takes more to bring it down when I eat above 150)
I ate and went for a walk. Afterwards my blood sugar was 200. I took 3 units. After that it was 266, I took 4 units. After that it was 277 and I took 4 more units. This was all over the course of 3 hours. I have had minimal carbs, and more than enough insulin. This happens around lunch time occasionally and I dont understand why. Why would our blood sugar levels continue to hit the roof even after triple the dose of insulin.
Thanks!
Your insulin may have gone bad. Check the expiratin date. When I was on Lantus that would happen to me. My rapid acting didn’t seem to ever get old enough.
Hello SBrook,
- Are you on an insulin pump? Did you check to see if your infusion set was leaking? Did you smell any insulin @ the infusion site?
- Exercise causes hormones to be release, and in tern raise our blood sugars, it’s perfectly normal for your blood sugars to raise after any physical activity.
- Keep in mind that foods with high protein and fats, can and often do, continue to raise your blood sugars up to 2 & 4 hours later, depending on the amount and what was eaten.

Yes I am on a pump and the site and tubing are just fine. I even switched to injections just in case it was a delivery issue.
I exercise on a regular basis (bootcamp, boxing, cycling, etc… so Im familiar with how my blood sugars react. It will go up within the hour after my workout so I set a square bolus to counter it. But a 10 minute walk should not raise my levels.
I notice sometimes my sugars jump up when I have very little carbs and high protein. I know my body will break down muscle and fat to convert it into sugars. However this usually regulates after a about a week on a low carb high protein diet. Today could have been an off day. Im just curious if anyone else experiences. this too.
I will check on the lantus. I am on an insulin pump and some days I don’t wear the pump so I switch to Lantus and Humalog by manual injection. I notice this has been happening more lately when Im on the lantus and not the pump.
However the rest of the day will be fine. When ever this happens its a random period of a few hours and things are normal before and after.
Yeah, a lot of us experience it. When your on insulin, there are days when my sugars are on point, and other days are like “what the hell happened?” LOL…
