Hi, did anyone else pay later for eating the sweets and goodies during the holiday season ? I keep telling myself this year I’ll stick to not binging on sweets and I blow it. The blood sugars have totally been out of control.500 one day 300 the next. Got any ideas on not binging on sweets ?
Hi, Pam, welcome here. I think the #1 thing that helps me is to keep it out of the house. I also keep in mind how lousy I feel when my bg is that high, and how long it takes me to get it down. It can totally ruin an entire day. I remember when we lived in OK how many tempting goodies they are known for (can you say “Sonic”?). Anyway, we had a good discussion with Erin when she was in the early stages of quitting smoking, and here are some great ideas from Amarilis called “things to do instead of eating”.
For 2 weeks after Christmas I had to run my basal rate at 10 units higher than normal, just this past week I was able to drop it back down to my old basal rate. But I also traveled and traveling always puts more stress on my body. When I go to my family for the holidays I normally ask them to make sure they have plenty of vegetables around as even if there are sweets I will eat vegetables over the sweets.
I think you should try replacing ordinary sweets with your own delicious snacks. I make a peanut butter cookie with splenda, and walnuts glazed with egg and splenda baked, and a popcorn snack coated wtih egg white chili pepper, hot pepper and splenda with peanuts; satisfy the craving without real sugar; I say this only to enclurage you to be creative, and not suffer the consequences of those sugar highs. My thoughts are with you, kindness and love, kwlawson
Hold on Pam, don’t hate me. I didn’t binge on sweets at all. A bit on turkey, but that’s OK. I just promised myself I would have one little thing here and an even smaller thing there on Christmas day. It helps that I didn’t go anywhere else on Christmas except to a friend’s house. They even controlled themselves that day. Nobody baked Christmas cookies, etc. We had dessert, yes. A little piece of pie and cool whip goes a long way when you fill up on veggies and turkey.
So, a little higher than normal, but not much on that day. I’m so proud of myself.
Take heart, it’s done. Get back on the stick and carry on sensibly!!!
