Would Homer Simpson be a diabetic if he were real? Lets face it…he has horrible eating habits and has no will power…
Well… you have to carry it in your genes – so unless Grampa Abe or someone else in his family had it, then no. lol
After watching many episodes of The Simpsons and seeing what Homer eats I would say that he would be dead before being diagnosed with diabetes.
Show already went there… “That 90’s Show”, while in Nirvana-alike band Sadgasm in Seattle, his diabetes was directly blamed on drinking too man Frappucinos :-). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/That_90's_Show
I wouldn’t touch this one with a 10’ pole. It’s going to turn into a heated argument on whether or not people eat their way to T2 (assuming you mean Type 2), or can change their “lifestyle” & control it.
I think the question perpetuates the myth that diabetics are diabetic because they are fat and lazy and eat the wrong things. So… if he were real, I’d say he was Fat and Lazy, but I wouldn’t presume to label him as diabetic.
I would believe this too!!!
Lol @ FdMsng99 that is so funny.
I would not wish even Homer Simpson got diabetes because its just not nice.Let the guy enjoy his food.lol
Thanks for writing…
Speaking from a type 2 perspective…
Before I was diagnosed I had no idea that my poor eating habits, working the night shift, sedentary lifestyle could contribute to me getting diabetes. Then nobody told me either. Homer most importantly a family man and the bread winner. He provides for his for his family which is no small task. There is a lot of stress and pressure in making sure everybody has what they need most of the time.
He is probably not as happy as he should be since he is small man at the nuclear plant and after 20 years has not really progressed up the job ladder. This is not a lazy man. Actually more fathers should like Homer!
On the flip side, we the viewing audience tend to focus on his silliness and buffoonish behavior. Just like most people he likes to enjoy the luxuries he can afford like pork chops, beer and doughnuts. Then he comes off as being fat and lazy when he is trying to relax. It is from these habits that after 20 years of watching the Simpson I ask wouldn’t the odds of him being a diabetic greater now? I think he should be experiencing other health issues to by now.
Regards!
With that beer belly, yeah he could be. But than if he was you wouldn’t get no laughs from him drooling over doh!-nuts or beer.
I doubt he would never go “Drooooooolll… low carb meal!”
And you would definately never get to hear him say “Correction - FREE Strips!”. (because there are never any damn deals for strips!)
“(Lisa) “I’m going to become a vegetarian” (Homer) “Does that mean you’re not going to eat any pork?” “Yes” “Bacon?” “Yes Dad” Ham?” “Dad all those meats come from the same animal” “Right Lisa, some wonderful, magical animal!”"
“Porkchops and bacon, my two favorite animals.”
“When you’re in my house you shall do as I do and believe who I believe in. So Bart butter your bacon.”
“Is it Bacon Day?”
“Mmmm. Move over, eggs. Bacon just got a new best friend - fudge.”
“Not again! First you took away my Philly Fudgesteak. And then my Bacon Balls. Then my Whatchamachicken. You monster!”
Homer: I’ll have the smiley face breakfast special. Uhh, but could you add a bacon nose? Plus bacon hair, bacon mustache, five o’clock shadow made of bacon bits and a bacon body.
Waitress: How about I just shove a pig down your throat?
(Homer looks excited)
Waitress: I was kidding.
Homer: Fine, but the bacon man lives in a bacon house!
Waitress: No he doesn’t!
“[strained] You know that feeling you get when a thousand knives of fire are stabbing you in the heart? I’m having that right now…[normal] Ooh, bacon!”
“Mmm … bacon”
“Mmm … unexplained bacon”
That is so cute!!! It is ashame because I love pork chops too…
at least hes getting enough protein
Agree completely, Devon!
I would say a 60 to 40 chance that he would not be most of americas obese are not diabetic.
I was focusing on his eating habits…
I know that it can seem “fun” to pick on a fictional character, and say he’s gonna get Diabetes (if he doesn’t already have it), cus he eats a lot of junk and has bad eating habits… But this kind of discussion perpetuates the ignorance of people simply getting Diabetes cus ‘they ate a lot of sugar,’ or ‘ate a lot of junk,’ regardless of the Type. The reality is that Diabetes is a complex genetically predisposed disease, with many variables being discovered daily, of which eating habits are only one variable – which doesn’t always seem to apply to everyone – Type 2, or not – and there are now studies that prove this. A person doesn’t get Diabetes just from eating junk. There has to be a genetic component. There are people who weigh over 1,000 lbs, right now, bed ridden because of how much they eat… With the grossest eating habits you can find – and they do NOT have Diabetes. They have a series on TLC about it – pretty shocking stuff.
It’s upsetting to see these types of discussions which only foster stereotypes & lay blame. People get enough of that from that misinformed media & often their family & friends. There’s enough guilt, shame & blame floating around without adding to it.
I know definitely Fred Flinstone would be a type 2?? Then again, how do you explain his hard work at the gravel pit? and all the running he does trying to start off his car, or running after Barney, or running away from his wife?? He gets a lot of physical exercise and does very hard work, yet HE would be very stigmatized and stereotyped as lazy and inactive.
This is suppose to be a fun conversation.
Nobody is blaming anybody here since we are all people on this website know better. It was just a thought that came to mind that actually hits a cord with you and a few other people. All the people on this website understand there is genetic component to diabetes. There is also a genetic and ethnic components to being obese, alcoholism and other diseases. Please explain how a person’s buffoonery is associated with being lazy and slow? That is what you should find upsetting.
Homer is not a lazy person in the fact he is taking care of his family with a stay at home wife. This should be commended consider what most families are facing today. But when you compound your life with daily activities, lack of physical activity and poor eating it is bound to have an affect on your health whether it is diabetes or heart disease.
