Biggest Loser 12 last night..You've lost so much weight you're not a Diabetic anymore. Ah OK

I caught that too. Glad he added but if you go back to eating the way you were it will be back. Sorry thing is he didnt say it was still there just under control! Bah

My thought was National TV millions watching......

OMG, more fuel for the (mis)fire. Will email them this aft!

So incorrect. Once a diabetic always a diabetic

I've written this before. It applies to this guy just as much as it applies to Dr Oz, Dr Phil and all their ilk.

TV Doctors are to medicine as Judge Judy is to justice. They are entertainers, paid by their producers; not doctors paid by their patients. They are paid to perform in a way that raises ratings.

There are many wonderful doctors in the world whose primary concern is the health of their patients. Unfortunately there are a minority of doctors who allow money or fame to relegate their hippocratic oath to irrelevance in their practice of medicine. I put that minority on the same level as the one you have all been watching in court last week, accepting $150,000 per month to malpractice while pandering to addiction. He was blatant and he was caught, but not before his patient died.

There are some I consider much worse; they are rarely caught but if you take certain medications you may be unwittingly suffering the consequences of their corruption. I commented on them here: Should Detectives, Not Just Academics, Review Drug Research?

I'd better stop there before the lawyers start reading this topic.

I don’t get it. If I didn’t need insulin anymore and responded to food as a non diabetic, I would say that I used to be diabetic. If I was fat and lost weight, then I would say I used to be fat and I just need to be careful not to get fat again. I wouldn’t say I suffer from obesity just because I was once fat and have to eat in moderation and exercise. If I was hungry and ate I would say I was no longer hungry, even though I will become hungry again if I never eat again.

I recognize that many type 2s will never fully recover, even though their quality of life improves, but is it really correct to say that once a diabetic always a diabetic? I’m T1, and the second that I revert to the way I was two years ago, I know I would say I no longer have it. Just don’t see that happening for me.

Don’t rant and hate on me, I just really don’t understand.

No rant. Just the facts.

Here is one crucial point:

and responded to food as a non diabetic

If, and only if, the weight loser can eat as a non-diabetic, without thought as to how many carbs are in a meal or drink, and test at their peak post-prandial timing with totally normal non-diabetic numbers regardless of whether they ate high carb or zero carb, then I would be prepared to consider them as non-diabetic.

I have not seen that claimed yet, nor do I expect to see it. I have seen it claimed for some forms of bariatric surgery, but deeper investigation nearly always shows some form of dietary restriction.

Weight loss reduces insulin resistance but it does not cure the other underlying problems of a type 2. I lost a lot of weight after my diagnosis - but I was still an A1c of 7.5% until I did more work on the menu.

Well said. Thx. Haven’t watched that episode yet so didn’t know how it was twisted.
