From what I understand, those who like the G6 can stay on it for the foreseeable future. Dexcom is trying to phase out the G6 but hasn’t set an end date as of yet.
One thing I love about the G7 though is that it only takes 30 min to warm up. it is also much smaller and one piece vs 2.
Wearing the G6 only on your stomach MAY be the problem. I used to wear my G6 on the upper backs of my arms, but when I changed to the OmniPod 5 a couple of years ago, Insulet made such a fuss about the OM5 and G6 being within a “line of sight” that I switched to ONLY wearing the G6 on my stomach and then rotating the OM5 around that location. I could get only 7-8 days out of the G6 before it would fail or give me wildly inaccurate readings.
A couple of months ago, I was so upset with the G6 and Dexcom’s lack of interest in doing anything about it, that I thought, “What the heck? Readings can’t be any WORSE on my arm after 7 days,” so I put the G6 on the back upper part of my arm. I learned that I got no loss of signal from the G6 to the OM5, and the sensor lasted 9 days before I got questionable readings. I was able to get 9 reliable days out of the next two on my arms, and I have gotten a full 9-10 days on each of the sensors on my arms ever since.
Did I just use all of a bad batch of sensors before I switched to my arms? Who knows? All I know is that since I switched back to using my arms, I have gotten much better, longer, more accurate results from the sensors.
Forget Dexcom’s propaganda that the G6 can only be used if placed on the abdomen. Using your arms may not work for you, but at least it is worth a try.
I have had good luck with the sensors on my upper buttocks and Dexcom must have also improved the sensor reliably as I have only had maybe 1 or 2 sensors this past year that didn’t last 10 days in the past year and they gave me replacements free of charge. I also restart my sensors and maybe half go another 7 to 10 days and the others 5 days or less. They are always way off after a restart but a couple calibrations gets the algorithm in sync. If it isn’t accurate, produces erratic short up and down readings, get stuck in a low or lots of sensor errors I remove them. It’s also important to use the free overlay patches you can request from Dexcom as they make the sensor hold well for 20 days.
I really like the upper buttocks as my underwear and pants protect the sensor and it is not visible! The only issue is you have to be flexible enough to reach around to apply and remove them.
