I'm wondering if anyone experiences the pen being less effective when its almost out? I use a Humalog KwikPen and carry it with me in my purse in a pouch. It seems like the insulin is less effective the closer it gets to the end. Reminds me of when my pump needed changing, the first days the insulin was fresh and super strong and by the 3rd or 4th day it was weaker. Does this happen with the pen? How many days do you use your pen? I know it says every 30 days before replacing it. Mines never lasted that long :( Any input would be great. I just started back on shots in July, I was a pumper for many years prior. Thanks Kim
I use Novolog and, with my doses, pens get emptied about one per week; however, when I have had a few with several units left (not enough for a meal dose) that I kept longer (for a snack bolus). I have not noticed any difference in effectiveness of the insulin in the pens that are older. Never tried one past 30 days, but certainly past a week or two with no problems.
At least 3 weeks. By 4 weeks we may start to notice a drop in effectiveness but we always switch out after 30 days anyway.
