How Long?

So today i had my lunch at mac (just a sandwich and a small MilkShake  and i bolused enough to cover it) around 6:00 pm. My BG nearly 4 hours after lunch was 83. i was amazed (i thought i would be in the 200s maybe 300s) and really happy i wasn’t high (for your information whenever i ate at mac i always had the extra large combo with the big drink, but today i decided that from now on i wont be having that).

when i tested my BG before dinner (8 hours after lunch), it was 189 (i didnt eat anything at all except for a little piece of sugar free chocolate).

im just curios about what made my BG go high? Could this still be the effect of the lunch? or is it just because i ate a long time ago?

Thanks

Did the sugar free chocolate have sugar alcohols in it? Those spike me the same as real sugar… and a little piece can have a lot!

Barbra, what does sugar alchol mean?

i’m with dave, the fat can continue to raise your blood sugar for 6 hours. McD’s is so loaded it’ll raise your bs for more like 8

Smetimes I dont know whats going on either!!! I take 16units at night of Levemir and have to stick myself every time I eat. Which means pre meal testing and figuring how much isulin to take according to that number and what I will eat. Supposedly the humalog works within 20 minutes but sometimes, more than once my bs will actually be higher than pre-meal test 2 hours after meal. I give up!

Last time I was in a big M it was in Seville and this was because it was the closest washroom. One of the downsides of traveling with diabetes.

Dear Amy.

Don’t give up it is very difficult but not totally impossible. Guessing (yes it is a guess) how much insulin you need is not an exact science. This is why Dr. Bernstein says to eat a very low carb diet since then you will need a low amount of insulin to cover and hence the error will be low. Hard to argue with his logic.

Anthony …you made me laugh …when were you in Seville ? and what a beautiful city .
Totally of topic but love to share : Gord and I were in Seville 1983 …pre diabetes for me . were sitting at an outdoor " bistro " and suddenly someone said to Gordon :" Gordon Peach from Vancouver , how are you ? " The fellow was a Vancouver business man …small world !!
I also recall falling in Paris ; wonder if diabetes was showing it’s ugly head then already .

As the others said, fat can cause a spike hours later & by then your bolus insulin is gone.

Amy,

It takes a lot of tweaking, trial & error. We’re all always adjusting our doses.

I’ve got a hunch that maybe your basal (background) coverage is insufficient and is starting to run out late afternoon/early evening. Like you say, you didn’t have a big lunch and if the chocolate you had later on was just a bite, I’m tempted to think that you might need to increase your basal insulin. Do your BGs start to creep up before your evening meal? Does this pattern repeat itself most days?

Thanks alot guys. i didnt know the fat could continue rising in my blood sugar for 8 hrs!! maybe next time i go i would just eat the chicken Caesar salad

Stephen, no my BGs dont start to creep up before dinner (only if i ate too much for lunch). its not a pattern sometimes they go high, sometimes low, and amazingly sometimes they are normal

Hi Anthony,
At first I didn’t eat much of anything because I was scared to. That got old fast and so I would eat anything I wanted almost. Of course that was no good either. After my initial apt with the dietician and she told me I have to count my carbs, I saw the logic in that but haven’t done it. I cant seem to get into the groove. I know at some pt. I will have to. I forgot how many carbs per meal it is? I think 30. Do you know? And 15 for snacks. I’m not sure, help!
Amy:)

larger than usual serving of protein will do it to me .

Same here. I try to keep the protein pretty consistent, but we all know how that goes.

No more milkshakes:(

What’s a milkshake??? Haven’t had one of those in…17 yrs!

unfortunately no :’( (maybe only when im low =) )

OMG big Mac is my life!! how could you not eat it?! WOW u should be really strong (to be able to resist something like Mac)
Hopefully one day i’ll be as strong as u are  but i’d still have Mac even if it was only like once every month or two =)
