Hi guys
I’m new here, a diabetic for 7 years (type 1) and an engineering student.
I never committed to a diet, my A1C is around 6.5 (not by a diet), having a lot of Hypoglycemia in the last 3 months.
Recently my health became bad and I couldn’t control my BG or my grades
I shut down all my social media accounts so I could pass last semester (kinda stupid move), so now I really want to change.
I want any advice that could help,a list of topics here to start with and any source of information about diets and diabetes.
I’ll be grateful
(sorry for any grammar mistake I may missed )
Well, glad to hear you are taking action, and welcome to the forums! There is great information and support here.
I can’t recommend a particular diet, but I can say that very low carb and low-moderate carb diets have been really important for my management. I currently eat about 100g of total carbs per day, with 30-50 of that being dietary fiber. I rarely go below 50g a day and never over 125g a day. Those are the “limits” I’ve found that enable me to keep my BG within my preferred range along with medication.
There is plenty of information on low-carb eating on this forum, and there are also subreddits on reddit like /r/keto and /r/ketogains which can be useful.
Hi Omar, I clicked on your avatar (the orange “O”) and I see you live in Jordan. What foods do you normally eat? You may want to try to focus on meats and vegetables, like David suggests - low carb. Rice is a really hard food for many of us with diabetes to handle, as are sweets and breads.
6.5 is pretty good, so you must be doing a lot of things right. Maybe you can do more checking of your blood, keeping a more detailed log of food, insulin and activity, making note of what you did.
and welcome to our community!! you can use the little magnifying glass symbol in the upper right of the screen to search the forum for topics of interest. Please feel free to comment on any discussions you find helpful, we like helping each other here, and you never need to mind your grammar here
I’ll search and try it
I think I should learn cooking and start tracking everything , my mom’s cooking is mostly rice
Yes, tracking your carbs is a good idea. Do you dose your insulin depending on how many carbs you will be eating? Many of us take that approach. You need to determine your insulin to carb ratio first. For example, a generous cup of rice has about 45 grams of carb. My insulin to carb ratio is 1:15, so I would take 3 units of fast acting insulin to cover. and that’s just for the rice, so if I were planning to have some pita chips and hummus, I’d have to figure that in too.
Being an engineering student, you’re probably used to using different apps. There’s plenty out there to help PWDs (people with diabetes) - One that might help you is mySugr
