I take 40 of lantus and 18 of apidra and I accidentally switched…what should I expect??
Eat some sugar, IMMEDIATELY. And check your BG every few minutes, eating carbs as needed until you are stable. That much Apidra could take you very low in a big hurry. Keep a close eye on your BG for the next couple of hours. I mean, CLOSE. With an overdose like that, you’re much better off running somewhat high, rather than dipping too low.
Once you get this under control, come back and let us know you’re okay!
omg, I would absolutely freak out and go to the hospital or to an emergency care center… Let us know if you are okay!
Been there, done that, by accident. Just keep an eye on your sugar, check often and eat carbs. You can google the proifle curve of the insulin and see how long it lasts… like I know my fast-acting peaks in an hour or 2, and lasts 4 hours in me. Good luck!
Any way you can prevent the error? Like sticking some tape on one pen, assuming you use pens to inject? ;p
Been there, done that! I took 30 of humalog a time or two. It wasn’t as scary as I thought it was going to be. Just check and eat. Although we are all D super heroes, we are still human.
Be grateful that you caught your mistake right away. I did that once and then went to bed. Next thing I knew there were large men hovering over my bed and loading me up on a gurney!
You won’t make that mistake again anytime soon. Hope you’re OK.
Are you okay?
I’ve made that mistake more than once, but the units of Lantus I take is only about the same amount I usually take for a meal bolus of Apidra. So all I had to do was to eat an extra meal’s worth of carbs. But if the 18 units you said you take of Apidra is the normal amount for a meal, you’d have to eat more than two meals worth of carbs extra!
After making that mistake a couple of times, I started storing my basal and bolus insulin pens in different locations. So far it hasn’t happened since that change.
If you have glucogon kit might want to keep it on you like in your pocket, which if you don’t, I highly recommend you get a pack of 2. Your endo can prescribe it. I would also notify someone close to you that lives nearby to stop by to check on you if you live alone. That way if you pass out, someone can call 9-1-1 on your behalf.
Glucogon has saved my butt literally in a couple of overdose mistakes. I will say that it does have an expiration but I used one that had expired while my husband stood by and witnessed. It still worked same as a nonexpired one. Glucogon doesn’t need to stay cold so its pretty awesome!
Let us know what happened.

@Bdp Are you okay? I have 2 good friends who’ve done this too.
anyway, we’d love to hear a happy ending to this story.
