I'm tired of being tired... and having to explain why

“Wow James… you sure sleep a lot…” I just heard this accusing comment from a friend after telling her I needed to take a nap.

It just gets old explaining that I’m not lazy; my 61 year old body just gets worn out from the blood glucose roller coaster ride. Then it’s the 20 questions from someone who doesn’t have this wonderful disease… did you eat too much sugar?.. are you taking your medicine?.. have you thought about losing some weight?.. oh, Type 2, so its your lifestyle …and on and on…

I end up trying to explain that 90% of my relatives on my mother’s side were diabetic. No they were not all obese. I eat fewer carbs and sugars than most folks. Yes, I take at least four shots a day. All along the conversation… it’s politely implied that I did this to myself.

Sometimes I just want to agree with them… yup, I’m a fat slob and I deserve to be diabetic.

Excuse me… I’m going to go take a nap.

hi, James, I get so tired of it all too, literally and figuratively. Here is a great discussion we had on family and friends “not getting it”. Hope today’s a better day for you.

The roller coaster - ugh. I hear you. I think it’s a valid way to feel. It’s so difficult to explain to people when by all accounts you seem “normal.” But it’s tiring. Maybe you could tell them that you and your doctor are still trying to determine how to bring up your energy level with your current treatment methods. That way they’ll back off and understand that it’s something you’re aware of and that it’s medically validated.

I use to feel the same way about people and their comments…I take naps too and I am tired as well. I don’t care anymore what people say or think!!! I just say “When you become diabetic, then you will understand, until then, I dont want your opinion or comments”.

Thank you all for responding! I LOVE this site… so many caring and understanding folks.

Marie B: That is a great discussion! Thank you for pointing it out.

MelissaBL: You’re right… we seem “normal”… but we can feel great one day and lousy the next day of the afternoon of the same day. Good idea medically validating my condition… except then I hear, “It’s been 8 months… are you sure your doc knows what she’s doing?” LOL!

Robyn: I like your approach… I hate to get snarky with people, but it sure gets old!

Thanks again for making me smile and feel better about myself!

I feel zapped after a day of blood sugars swings, but like others say, we still look normal.

The good thing is that you are not alone. There are other people that are sitting on that same rollercoaster and we’re here.

When people don’t get it, know that there are people that do!
