Hi, I am new to this group. I am just starting ballet classes again now that I am almost 30. I used to take ballet, pointe, jazz, and tap from the age of 8-18, but I didn’t get type 1 diabetes until I turned 19. I was just curious to find out what anyone who wears an insulin pump does with the pump while wearing a leotard. I can only wear a leotard and tights(no shorts or pants or skirt). Do you clip it to the back of your leotard or just take it off for the time you are dancing?
Hi Kim,
I’m a LADA who isn’t on insulin, yet, but I’m really interested in the answer to your question, too. I went back to ballet at around 30yo, and kept on going back every few years. I am 57yo now and can’t afford to pursue ballet because my twin dds take so many classes. It’s expensive.
It takes the right kind of bra, but I keep my pump tucked in my bra. I used to belly dance and take my pump off when I performed.
Hi, I am also new to this group. My daughter is 11 years old and got type 1 six months ago. She is a competitive dancer and she wears a spy belt for her classes. I recently put a button hole in the sides of her leotard. she threads the tubing through the leotard and then again through the spy belt. this seems to work the best and she can get to her pump when needed easily.
hope this helps
Hi Kim! I was diagnosed at 18—took ballet, point, jazz, lyrical, etc lessons for 15 years without diabetes. (I think we are the minority Although I am now on the OmniPod (which I highly recommend to everyone, especially those physically active), I had a MM pump for about a year and would clip it to the front middle of my bra, under my leotard. Hope this helps.

My son dances competitively - ballet, lyrical, tap, jazz - he uses the omnipod which helps in that regard.
There are others with diabetes at his studio. I have seen a girl tuck her pump up into the leg of her leotard. I like the bra tuck idea a little better though!
Lorraine, is there anything that Caleb doesn’t do and/or doesn’t excel at? You have quite a son there!
Haha. Thanks. He doesn’t like to run.
I often wear my pump in my bra, I put it in the middle lying horizontally and it’s usually not visible even in a tight top. I guess it depends on your assets how best to place it! For me this works better with a padded bra. Good on you getting back into ballet, enjoy.
I totally get leotards, but I’d pretty much stopped wearing them (for gymnastics), by the time I started pumping.
However, I now do aikido, which involves lots of rolling, high falls and being thrown vigorously across a dojo…
I don’t wear my pump for class, but to make management easier for the 90-150 minute classes, I use Lantus for 75% of my basal requirements. It’s been termed “untethered”, and it really works well for me. Interestingly, I’m now needing about half the insulin I used to need before I pumped.
Might be worth a chat with your endo. I believe it’s a technique used by swimmers and other water based athletes who don’t use a waterproof pump or Omnipod.
