My daughter is 5yrs old and is a lilttle interested in a pump. I would like to know if anyone has a child at this age with a pump or Continous Glucose Monitor, that has any sugeestions. Like or dislikes. Thanks so much.
My 18 year old son started on a pump 2 1/2 years ago and my 6 year old daughter will be starting on her pump next week. My son loves his, it gives him more freedom and he loves not have the injections all the time. My daughter is excited to start her pump, but also a little nervous. I know she will love it once she has been on it for a while, it is just another thing to get used to and I know she will love not having the injections anymore! Pumps are a very personal choice and I think you should do alot of investigating into what your daughter would like the most and what you think is important to her. Good luck and if you have questions we are here for you!
My son is six. He started on an Animas pump 5 months after his diagnosis, when he was 3. I love the Animas. It’s waterproof. He wears it in the bath and when he swims. There has been an upgrade since he got his (his is an Animas 1250). Animas now has the new ping system too. I’ve heard good things about it.
I just wanted to send you a quick note. My daughter is also 5 years old she has the minimed 522 with continuous glucose monitor. We absolutely love the pump and the monitor. She has been on both since the end of last Oct (2008). Her blood sugars are doing good and I for one am getting more sleep at night thanks to the cgm. Emily loves the fact that she doesnt have to have the shots anymore and she is enjoying the freedom that comes with the pump itself (Not having to eat meals at certain times in order to cover the insulin shots). The only thing she doesnt like is when we have to replace the cgm sensor and that is because the needle is bigger but we put this numbing cream (Emla cream) and 45 minutes later the area is numb and she doesnt feel a thing. I recommend the pump and the cgm!
We love the pump – have been on for 2 years now. IT sure makes life easier. We are looking into CGM now because we are having issues with our 10 year old wanting more independence but not responsible enough yet to follow through on testing.
My daughter is 7 and is getting her pump next week - we should be pumping within a few weeks. I know lots of parents on another board who are pumping with children as young as infants. Many of them also CGMS. Here is a link to some of the discussion on young children (many of these are toddlers) and the pump. http://forums.childrenwithdiabetes.com/showthread.php?t=30851&highlight=toddlers+pumps
Hope this helps!
