Hi all. Its been about three weeks now since diagnosis. Coming to terms with it a little more, but I still have my days where it just really gets me down. But I am getting better. It just is so frustrating to count carbs, give myself what I think is my insulin to carb ratio, and then either have a low or high and not stay in that normal range. My insulin to carb ratio seems to change daily and that is quite frustrating. I REALLY want to switch to an insulin pump asap just because I am sick of shots already, and everything I have read seems like once I make the switch life will just become more normal and a little easier–which I definitely am ready for.
Can’t give you any comparisons but I started on the Omnipod today. My main goal is to lessen the lows/eating every time I exercise. I imagine they are all very similar in set up and what they do. You have to decide what will be less annoying, having a larger object stuck on your skin or being hooked to tubes 24/7. You can try wearing an Omnipod, just go to the website and fill out the form for a free trial. You may be able to wear a tubed pump on trial also. Ask your Dr.
I also just recently started on a Dexcom CGM and love it!
Gook luck!
Since I started pumping almost 12 years ago I’ve had more freedom then the 40 years of shots gave me. Since I have years of comparison I will tell you I wish they had pumps when I was dxed. Learning about the pump was a re-education for me. When I was dxed they didn’t count carbs…hopefully you carb count if you do that will be one things you don’t have to learn.
Since you’re tired of shots then maybe the pump is for you…it gives you more freedom then shots. You’re not tied to specific times to eat; having to take shots certain times of the day; taking 2 types of insulin and anything else I’ve missed.
I’m in the process of switching from shots to pump so I can’t give any feedback in regards to the pump. I’ve been doing shots for almost 4 years and wished I went straight to the pump. Would’ve of made my life a lot easier. I just read about the dexcom and love the features of it. Its all about what your needs are and what you are going for.
Honestly the advancement of the Ping as compared to the MM… Its like the Blackberry Vs iPhone… The iPhones moving with times Blackberry is just staying still lol MMs only thing that they have is the intergrated CGMS but honestly and i have it i cant standddd it! its just not made great design wise and the accuracy is subpar and it tests every 20 minutes as where the Dexcom is more accurate and a lotttt easier to get in your skin and tests every 5 minutes… plus the Ping uses One Touch strips which i swear by and it has a food database and you can control everything from the meter which is a major plus if your like me and wear your pump on your thigh and stuff… plus its got the lowest basal and bolus and its waterproof… the omnipod is trash IMO (only in my) i dont like it nor do i like freestyle meters… i suggest the Ping highly but MM is a great company to just they have kinda went down the drain customer service wise over the years
And for the record ive had MM 522 for about 5 years MM 512 for about 3 years before that and im about to get my Ping…
We have used both the Minimed pump and Animas pump for my niece. She started out with Animas pump, switched to Minimed when she tried cgms. She hated the Minimed cgms. She now uses the Minimed pump with the Dexcom Seven Plus cgms and it is night and day; Dex is so much easier to use, more comfortable to insert, I can’t say enough about the ease of the Dex. But you have to carry the extra Receiver. So when Dex integrates she will probably go back to Animas. Then, again, if Minimed does bring out its comfortable sensor, she may stay with Minimed. As of today, I would strongly recommend going with Dex/Animas or Dex/Omnipod combo because Minimed has been dragging its feet on the comfortable sensor for quite some time.
