Hi everyone. I am new here. I was diagnosed with type 1.5 in November 2011. Just recently I was changed to a type 1. My insulin needs have drastically changed over the last year and a half and seem to fluctuate almost monthly. It's been a frustrating ride, but I finally feel like I am on the right path since I am getting the Omnipod in 1 WEEK! Any users have tips for me? I've never had a pump, so all of this is new. I know the diabetes educator at my doctor's office will have plenty to say on how to use it, but as we all know, experience is gold.
Ive been T1 diabetic for almost 2 years and on the pod for 1.5..its 100x better than MDI imo. Ive been able to maintain extremely tight control with the pod, and it makes it easy to fine tune basal increments for people that fluctuate like yourself. I always make sure to get every single air bubble out when filling the syringe with insulin prior to filling the pod. The pump will prime itself, but one air bubble can throw blood sugar for a loop. I also use the extended bolus feature at every meal, especially with eating a high fat/protein low carb diet. I find the humalog is a bit too fast acting to give all at once. Everything else is pretty much trial and error and fine tuning to your needs...enjoy!
Hey tiffernee! Congrats on taking the jump to the pod! You may want to join us over in the omnipod group to get a better response. I would say that with any pump there is a learning curve as you figure out basal rates, how to use it, etc. Give yourself 3 to 6 weeks to get the hang of it and ask lots of questions! Patience is key at the beginning, but once you get it down the pod system is great!
