and honestly, the more I think about this, the more irritated I get. Maybe I’m just extra cranky today. But if Did it make a difference ? …in my mind NO then why did you feel the need to stet it in the first place? Your responses in that post I made were often quite challenging to what I was experiencing so I am still wondering why?
The only insulin pump that currently communicates with a continuous blood glucose monitor (CGMS) is the Minimed Paradigm Real Time system, which was mentioned. Many people prefer the Dexcom and the Navigator continuous blood glucose monitors and find that they are more accurate. They use these with pumps that are NOT connected to monitor, which is not a huge difference in my opinion).
I was not originally a Medtronic user, nor a Medtronic fan. However, when I relocated to outside the USA, the Medtronic was my best option for a pump. So I chose it. I had read SO many bad things about the Minimed CGMS that I was determined to get a different CGMS from the USA, which would be more expensive and more difficult (like trying to convince and American doctor to write me a prescription, etc.). But I had the option for a free 9 day trial with the Minimed CGMS and I decided just to try it.
I am VERY pleasantly surprised! The MM CGMS is very accurate for me, the insertion did not hurt at all, I find the site as comfortable as my pump infusion set. Really no complaints. My sensor lasted 7 days with high accuracy so far.
I think that everyone has different results and opinions with pumps and CGMS, but I would try first what is available locally.
I would research what insulin pumps are available in India. My guess is the Medtronic is the pump that is easiest to get there. Click here for the Medtronic India website. If the prices are the same as in Hungary, the Medtronic Insulin Pump costs around 6000 USD for the pump, plus about 200 USD per month for the pump supplies. The Continuous blood glucose monitor that communicates with it must be purchased separated. It is around 1000 USD initial costs (for the transmitter and 4 sensors), then about 100-200 USD per month.
In Hungary, the Animas and and the Accu-chek pumps are also available, but ONLY older versions of the pumps compared to what is available in the USA. No other CGMS is available. Medtronic is the biggest company and has made the most effort to go global. In Hungary they have an office where I can get all my supplies and representatives that are well trained. Even if you can get one of the other pumps or CGMS from the USA, it will be hard to get support with it. We all know that sometimes technologies fail and you need a replacement. So I would recommend to buy in India if possible unless you frequently travel to another country.
I also found this website for insulin pumps in India. Even though you can read bad reviews of the Medtronic system, I would recommend trying it first for yourself. It works very well for me (and others) and will almost definitely be the easiest system to get in India.
Scott,
I read your discussion from before and it helped me out quite a bit. So, thanks! I’m currently waiting on insurance quotes for the Dexcom CGMS and figure out if I can get it and if it will work for me. No MM bashing here, but I did have a lot of issues with the 722 that I bought years ago (before they were fully covered by most insurance companies) Also developed some kind of allergic reactions to the MM catheters. Am hoping that the Dexcom catheters are using a different brand.
Hope hope hope
It has been a long journey with many many roadblocks, but I’m taking what little bits of help I can find and trying to put them to the best use.
So, thanks.
Good info Kristin. I think it is challenge to “learn” to use a cgm, just like it was when I went on the pump, some 15 years ago.
From my own experience wearing two brands and three versions of cgm’s at the same time, side by side, they are all similar in accuracy. I found that key to good function is calibration.
Scott, thankorgor the up.
For those outside of the US, look for the Minimed Veo. This is a semi closed looped system that uses much of tech from the paridgm. It is only sold outside of the US.
There some improved sensors being released next year that performuch better than the currently shipping versions from all cgm producers.
