Interview Questions For Diabetes Bloggers/Advocates - Help us out!

Hi TuDiabetes friends!

As I mentioned in my opening blog, I also help maintain the Juvenile Diabetes Cure Alliance blog. One of the most interesting things we have going on is our diabetes blogger interviews - basically we get in touch with different people from the type 1 blogosphere and ask them to share their experiences with us: http://jdca2025.wordpress.com/category/star-feature-diabetes-blogger-interviews/

As we are attracting more and more people - soon we will have diabetes book authors and cure researchers, we want to be asking the questions that people really want to hear about. We want the questions to come directly from the diabetes community, because that is who we want to represent.

So what would you like us to ask a parent taking care of a young child with type 1? Or a seasoned advocate who has been living and dealing with diabetes for many decades? What about the researchers working in the labs looking for a cure?

All suggestions are welcome - don’t be afraid to speak up!

I want to hear from an athlete about how they manage sugars during an athletic event. I have been told by my endo that contrary to expectations, BG goes high not low in the early part of a game or event because of stress hormones, then it reverses itself as the exertion kicks down the glucose level. I want to know how athletes maintain their performance AND their BG level at the same time, because the division of focus between the BG and the game must be really tough! Especially for an elite-level athlete. I have a young son and while he’s still a bit too young to start to want to join pee wee hockey or little league or what have you, that day is coming soon… and I want to be prepared.

PS Diabetes book author right here! 100 Q&A About Your Child’s Type 1 Diabetes (published July 2011, coauthored by Jerrold Olshan MD & Mary Ann WAterman NP CDE). Just so you know that even “experienced” parents with a lot of resources still have questions

Hi Elizabeth,

This question is right on time - we will soon be reaching out to an athlete that participates in a very high-level endurance sport where he has to keep that balance between normal BG levels and maintaining performance. That is a very interesting question to get his thoughts on, I will certainly include it on the list!

cool - I will definitely look forward to the answer. Eric seems to take a nose dive just running around the farm, so I could use a little guidance in that area.
