Introduction

October 19, 2013.

That was the day I knew my life was never going to be the same.

Actually, September 6, 2013 was the day I knew something was profoundly wrong with me, but October 19, 2013 was the “Congratulations, you’ve got diabetes” diagnosis and the day I spent sobbing on my living room floor because this effin’ sucked.

I have latent auto-immune diabetes in adults, LADA for short, also known at Type 1.5 Diabetes. It’s basically slow onset Type 1 Diabetes. I don’t require insulin yet…but I will eventually become dependent on insulin to live.

I’m the first in my family to have this kind of diagnosis. Not exactly the type of pioneering I wanted, but those are the cards life dealt me.

So far, I'm handling the diagnosis fairly well. I'm a nurse, so I've got a fair amount of medical background about diabetes, but I sure never imagined that I'd have to relate it to my personal life.

I hoping with this website to get support through this whole diabetes roller coaster ride and am already pleasantly surprised by the outreach just in the short day I've been here. :)

sorry about your diagnosis but welcome you're in the right place.
this is family :)
hugs

Welcome there are those that know a lot and those that ask a lot. I am the newbie so ask a lot. Great place to be and will learn a lot. You are what you are but just be the best you can be.

you can do this, my friend!!
we are all sitting in the same boat, come here if you feel bad or want to cry, if you have accomplished something you feel like the whole world needs to know, if you want some information, or if you only need a talk about food (we love food in the chatroom ;), your new bike, your neighbor's dog or that freaking annoying beetus you just can't get rid of.
wishing you all the best!

Welcome to the community.

I'm so sorry about your diagnosis, it is a terrible shock. I think you will adjust very well, and your background will help you. Welcome :)

Sorry about your diagnosis. My type 1 dd was dx'd at 4 1/2 yrs old (almost 8 now). My husband is on his way to an LADA diagnosis. My son (6 yrs old) also has the autoantibodies for type 1. They are both at the University of Iowa today doing their TrialNet testing (OGTT, a1c's, autoantibody testing). My son does it every 6 months and so far has been clear of any glucose intolerance. My husband is following up from a drug study he did with TrialNet over the summer but we expect an actual diagnosis after the testing today is complete. Hang in there. You can do this!
