I’ve been diabetic for almost 16 years now and enjoy sweets, pastas and other very high carbs. When I do eat all these carbs I ALWAYS make sure to cover them with insulin and have an average blood glucose (of the past 3 months) on my meter of about 130.
Am I hurting myself by consuming so many high carb things (about 6+ times a week) even though my blood sugars are under control? My endo told me that it would effect my weight which intern might make me more insulin resisitant. But are there any direct ways that consuming high carbs could be effecting me?
My family is convinced that i am “abusing” the insulin
What meter do you use? some of them as my one touch was reading low by 20 points. Otherwise if the meter is accurate and there is no way of knowing that, I would continue are you are. Maybe a HA1c test to confirm the meter average? It could be that by eating the occaisional carbs you are NOT stressing yourself and that is obviously good for control. If you can cover them with insulin and are not gaining weight you are a winner, keep it up.
Hello Kathy , I use approx 190 grams of carb daily …have not gained any weight for years at 137 pound, 5 ft 61/2 inches …sometimes loose weight when I am in a 1/2 ,marathon training …only 1-2 pounds …no big deal …I have diabetes for over 26 years : I guess high metabolism …use approx 22 u daily …am sensative to insulin and oh, boy if I do not deliver enough …up it goes …my line is : am sensitive to NO insulin as well .
I do want to keep my girlish figure …and I stay away from desserts , other than the odd couple of cookies .Maybe I am different ??
Is A1C in order ??
Wow Nel. I am jealous if I ate so many carbs 300 units of insulin would not be enough. If you are not insulin resistant and can match insulin to carbs is there any limit on carbs? I remember one year ago I could eat 100 grams of fettucini and match them with 20 units of insulin and not get a spike over 180 after 1 and 2 hours. I would not dare try that any more.
That is most sensible advice is to eat the “healthy food” that your body aided by your insulin can handle and avoid those that you cannot match. Pizza is a super greasy carb that is hard to handle. I did in the past be able to eat 2 small pieces and match it reasonably well at the 1,2 3 and 4 hours but not consistenly so it is a food I think best avoided by diabetics.
