Well, today marks 30 years since I was diagnosed with Type 1 and I thought where better to celebrate (or commiserate!) it than right here.
I’ve been lucky enough to escape any complications after all that time too, so I guess it’s also my 30 year complications-free anniversary!!!
And how did my body decide to start this momentous day? With a high blood sugar of 149 Yep, no celebratory breakfast for me then - thanks body, nice knowing you…
Anyway, here’s a few factoids about me and my anniversary (!):
I was diagnosed at age 3 on 7th April 1979
Since then I’ve done 21,900 injections
I’m still using porcine insulin, just as I was back then
I’m still using hypodermic syringes, not pens
I remember the days of glass syringes and self-sterilising
I remember when the UK government finally allowed disposable syringes on prescription
I remember the days before blood testing
…and a huge THANKS goes to:
My parents - without them caring so much I wouldn’t be here today
My diabetes specialists at the Leicester Royal Infirmary when I was little, Dr.Peter Swift and Dr.John Rawlinson
The NHS (and I KNOW it has its faults!!) - free prescriptions for life means that I never have to worry about buying insulin, syringes, blood testing strips, and anything else I need
All those at TuDiabetes (of course!) visiting this site has helped me to find a new interest in this condition and spurred me on to lose weight and improve my HBA1c score, both of which I’ve now done! Thanks!
