Tonight, before I went out to dinner and a movie (an extremely rare treat), I was feeling off, a bit nauseous and kind of shaky. I was eating Indian food. I eat low carbs (have just lost 105 pounds), and even though my blood sugar -- before I left for the evening was 93 -- I had some rice with the food. And then a small popcorn at the movies. I felt SO MUCH better and my blood sugar just rose a lovely 20 points, I am confused (and grateful). Why didn't rice and popcorn cause a more significant rise in blood sugar? Doesn't make any sense to me. Ideas?? Thanks!
Was it flat the rest of the evening? I don't recall exactly what your meds were that you posted in that other thread (threads?) but w/o insulin, I would expect more of a spike but I'm T1. I don't know how the timing and adjustment of oral meds and/ or insulin would work to cover something like what you're describing. It's certainly worth celebrating though!
Are you sure your meter is right? My blood sugar would be in the 300's from that! Also it's odd you feel that way when you're 93. I generally don't question my meter but in this situation you might want to try another one and compare and then if it's off consider switching.
My guess is that after losing 105 pounds your insulin resistance may be greatly reduced thus your pancreas is better able to handle the increased carbs from the rice and popcorn. It sounds like you are doing an excellent job with your diabetes, Good work.
Thank for your reply to my question. I appreciate the feedback.
Hi Zoe, Thanks very much for writing. I have two meters, and they're saying the same things. I guess all the weight loss must be it, and it is just amazing. I am VERY grateful, but the sweating/yuck sometimes isn't much fun. Compared to alternatives, I'll take it. As best best I know, my blood sugar has never gotten as high as 300 -- never over 200 -- so I can't even imagine how that would feel :( I am very grateful you wrote. Thank you very much. SN
