Lab Tests and Glucose Tabs

I am way overdue to get labs done; I keep putting it off as I hate going out first thing in the morning without even my cappuccino! So I planned to do it this morning. Then I woke up at 3AM, felt off and tested and I was 49 so of course I had to treat (3 glucose tabs). Even though I sleep late and wouldn't have been at the lab until 10ish, I assumed the glucose tabs would disqualify me from being "fasting". Is that the case does anyone know for sure?

I'd call the ordering doctor's office and ask. I don't think glucose tabs would mess up a lipid panel, since there's no fat there, and that's probably what you're fasting for.

ditto niccolo but I would not call and I would not tell. They probably won't believe you anyway since 10 am is kind of late for a fasting blood draw. I get mine done early so I can get my cuppa joe, and I have popped a glucose tab before to get there. My panel stays the same. Good luck with your results :)

Thanks you guys; I really need to get this done (A1C, TSH, etc for Medicare)and have been putting it off too long. Karen, I don't get up till 9-10 so for me that IS early...lol.

Oh, ha ha. I like to go early because waiting isn't my thing. If I went to the lab at 10ish the wait would be ever long from all the folks sent over from the docs office for a lab test, and then it would be lunch and still no coffee. Not Good!!

I am a night person in a world of morning people; always have been, but now that I am partly retired I can indulge it! It boggles people's minds when I say, "no 10AM is too early for the appointment". I only have one other friend who is a night person. I flew in to see him on a red eye, arriving at 7AM. When we agreed he would pick me up at 9 after a leisurely breakfast I understood what a good friend he was being...LOL.

I should have posted this sooner. I've missed two lab opportunities due to lows...oh, well and about 20 due to procrastination.

I don't believe a few Dex 4's is going to mess up your labs, I doubt they R checking to see if your a diabetic...:-)

On Monday my BG was 55 when I went for labs and they called me up later in the day and scolded me for not treating my low BG....I

really had no idea I was 55...;-(

I don't think you need to fast for a lipid panel anymore. The lab asks if I am fasting & does the draw marked non-fasting. My doctor says it's been discovered that it doesn't ,ake much difference to the results.

I don't do just lipids, Annabella, but thyroid, A1C and it seems a couple other things. Gotta do it all every 6 months for Medicare.

No, they don't consider glucose tabs or even apple juice an issue. They won't impact your numbers, other than your fasting glucose. And since you're D, they'll know that your glucose reading may be off so they won't be concerned. Just don't eat anything after midnight, do glucose tabs only if you need them, and water is OK.
