My cardiologist has scheduled me for a cholesterol only screening this morning and I had a low bg during the night that I treated with ONE glucose tablet. Since i only took one tablet I suspended my basal to avoid going down any further hoping I could get through this. Will taking only one tablet affect my test??? Should i rescedule?I took it at 2:00am and my appt is at 8:30am.
I think you're fine. There is no cholesterol in glucose tabs.
You should tell them about it, though. I can't see them complaining about it in the end, and that way you're keeping everyone informed.
Also, the A1C does not require fasting. I am sure this is quite a common occurrence.
I doubt it would make much difference although I usually try to fast to make the results match what they are looking for. I always fast for A1Cs too, as the lab people act like it's necessary and I have bigger fish to fry. I'm seeing new endo on Friday so perhaps I'll ask her about it.
First, I missed that this is cholesterol testing...
Actually, AR, I am usually fasting for the A1C, as it is wrapped up in a whole bunch of other tests that require it.
I was also surprised, but my endo tests my A1C in his office at each visit, and I never come in fasting. I asked my PCP and he confirmed it was not required. I think the lab people just get stuck in fasting land.....
I’m sitting in the lab at this moment (starving I might add!) and after reading your responses I think I’ll tell the lab I’m fasting so that they won’t refuse me. But, I will tell my cardiologist and hope he won’t send me back to redo the test. Thanks for your help!
I doubt that one glucose tab will have any effect on a cholesterol test.
All done!i went ahead and told her that I ate one glucose tablet and she said it wasn’t a problem. At lease next time if this happens again I can treat my low without being concerned about false results.
The concern about fasting with the cholesterol test is that it can cause transient high levels. And high blood sugars are converted by our bodies to triglycerides in order to lay down that extra fuel as body fat. But if you treat a low conservatively, your blood sugar won't go high and your test will be fine.
Thanks Brian, as usual I can expect a professional answer from you.
My endo's lab vampires leave us alone with fasting--but that might be because I'm always there in the afternoon or evening, and there's just no way I'm fasting for that.
