Hello everybody!
I read the book of Dr. Bernstein and it works great.
But I have one problem in the evening my blood sugar always goes up.
I inject Levemir in the evening and in the morning.
In his book Dr. Bernstein writes that Levemir works 18 hours if injected in the morning. Does it work for you?
If I inject more Levimir Iām too low during the day.
Hello Steffi,
I used Levemir and I tried to live with all my units of Levemir in the morning but when I woke up it was always high so a friend of TuDiabetes, Holger told me that it was better with two shots. So now I'm under two shots of Levemir 7 units at 8 in the morning and 4 units at 8 in the evening. it works but sometimes I need to eat something when I go to sleep. I tried to inject more units but I was too low. I think that it's right Levemir works only 18 hours. And sometimes my blood sugar is high in the evening and I need to inject one or two units of Apidra to help Levemir but this is when I eat a little two much carbs. I try to follow dr Bernstein 's diet but it's hard. I'm a type 1.
Hello Brigitte
thank you so much for the response!
I'm already under two shots of Levemir but I think that for me it works less than 18 hours because in the evening I'm always too high. But you inject Levemir every 12 hours, don't you? So maybe that works better? I inject at 7am and 11 pm because I think I read that Levemir injected in the evening only works 8,5 hours.
Yes I know sometimes it's really hard and I'm little frustrated because I eat very little carbs and still my blood sugar is too high in the evening.
yes I try to inject every 12 hours. My 4 units for the night seem to work well . But my problem is in the morning it seems that I don't need my 3 units of Apidra bacause I go low too many time one hour after my breakfast and my Apidra units.
Okay great, I'll try to inject Levemir every 12 hours.
Yes maybe 3 units are too much, because you need very little basal insulin, don't you?
So maybe you have a very good insulin sensitivity
I am no longer on Levemir, since going on OmniPod with Apidra only. I highly recommend Omnipod! the results are so much better! can take as little as .05 units at a time (and easier to get the bolus into your system, no need to leave the room, etc.). My advice, if you can't go on the OmniPod pump
--and I think Dr Bernstein recommends this--is, in addition to doing 2 injections a day, get the junior syringes that allow you to take as little as a half unit--that could help you fine tune it. When I was on injections, I actually took 2 shots of the basal (had a few types). They were fewer than 12 hours apart--bedtime and then breakfast. I really recommend the OmniPod though, for tighter control and less aggravation. Tubeless and wireless, too.
Thanks Melissa for sharing your experience!!
I had the Minimed before, but I stopped it because I read the book of Dr. Bernstein. Without the pump my BG is a little bit better but you're right injections aren't handy.
The Insulin one use for the OmniPod is fast acting, isn't it? Does it work with Proteins? Because with my pump I was too low at the beginning and to high afterwards.
I think Dr. Bernstein himself takes three separate basal injections. I haven't quite figured out when but I think its upon arising, at bedtime, and bedtime +4. I personally still take one shot of Lantus but its always a train wreck in the morning.
