You are supposed to do two shots on Levemir? My doctor only has me taking one at night.
That is what my endo suggested. But it is dictated by patient response. Some people can get away with one shot of levemir a day but others cannot.
Levemir pen fills aren't available here, but you can remove the vial/penfill in the throw away pens, put a rubber orange cap on it from a novolog pen fill and pop it into the novo pen echo or one of the other pens to get half unit dosing. I have been doing that for a while now- hobbit kindly told me how to do this. Simply carefully saw both sides of the plastic part of your levemir plastic pen with a serrated kife, such as a steak knife, remove the vial, put the orange cap on and put it into your permanent pen.
Hi Cassie, It depends on how the insulin acts in you- some people, like me, have dp and also spike up a lot as the basal runs out. Actually even two shots doesn't work all that well for me.
My blood sugar has been low every morning since I started back on MDI. I’ve tried decreasing the dose but it doesn’t help. Maybe take it at a different time?
Hi there! I’ve been a type 1 for over 5 years now and 3 years in I decided to get a pump. I got a Medtronic pump (on loan for 12 months until my private health kicked in) then at the start of 2014 I got my own pump. All together I was on the pump for approx. 18 months. 6 months ago, I ran out of pump supplies and just decided to go back to injecting. When I went back to injecting, I felt free! No more having to unclip my pump every time I work out or take a shower, no more having to through my pump over the other side of my body when I wanted to change what side I was sleeping on, no more having people stare at this pager looking thing attached to my skirt/pants (even though pagers are only really used by doctors etc now!). So injecting (for me) is a much better way to manage my diabetes.
Long acting insulin, I have always used lantus and I split the dose morning / night which I find is much more effective. I use novo rapid for fast acting. I do a lot of exercise, mostly high intensity and strength training which I find helps my insulin work better…
Wow! that's ingenuity - problem solving skills.
Cassie,
From your earlier post, it sounds like you are taking all your levemir in 1 dose. It is supposed to be split into 2 doses, 12 hours apart.
These doses need not necessarily be the equal. Ie. I take 15 units of levemir at night and 6 units in the morning.
Try splitting into 2 doses and see how you go.

I use levemir 2X a day and then Apidra for bolus whenever. I fill the levemir syringe for the next full day after I take my second shot in the evening, and I leave it with the levemir bottle. With Apidra I keep 2 loaded syringes on me in my BG test kit along with glucose tablets. It works fine.
My only issues are when I eat without bolusing correctly ahead of time (pump doesn't resolve that) and when I do very rigorous exercise (2 hours), and less insulin is needed.
I have a Dexcom CGM which I like a lot, but it isn't really necessary.
