Lookin to pump it!

Ok hes driving me crazy!! He wants a pump yesterday! Ive researched til Im nuts and frankly just sick of it all! We have decided finally on the Ping. I just pray that insurance will come through for us on it. we have or Dr appt on the 15th. His BS 's are nutts also… we have gone a month of battling extreame HIGHS to now this week to 4-5 lows a day. I really have felt that after a year and a half we would be better at this and his numbers be better. his AC1 in Nov. was 8.8 its gone a point higher every month. I think im just a little put out with everything tonight! i cant even type!..LOL

How old is your son? I’m guessing… 11, 12? My first response to the post above… puberty! Puberty makes a diabetic’s body do some whacky things. Talk to the doctor about it. I was a WRECK at 15. Okay, I was a horrible teenage girl, but the big D made it so much worse like I was under a microscope and each step it got worse. My sugars were HIGH one day and then LOW the next.

Let us know how the doctor appt. goes.

I have been diabetic for almost 18yrs, and I’m still not perfect at it. The body changes and you get different reactions. It’s frustrating and a downer sometimes. But that is what we are here for to vent, to learn and to give hope.

Good Luck and take care.

Hunter is 12 and he does 15 units of Lantuis at night and he does 50>150 on his BS and 8 units of novolog for every 8 carbs. thanks for your responses!

Kaci and Hunter-
I’ve been T1 for 36 years. I got my pump 10 years ago and I’m in the best control I’ve ever been in! And, I know there is still room for improvement. I say go with the pump.

I see my guess above was right - 12. (My son in 10.) I think you’ll be able to ride the puberty wave much easier with a pump. Hope all goes well!

That is exactly what we started out with until honeymoon was over…then it all increased over time!

Kaci, don’t give up on the insurance paying for this. Sometimes you have to stay after them on this. I believe they will come through for you, knowing how severe a Type 1 diagnosis is for kids. Also, you are still trying to get a handle on this. You will, just have faith. We all have and are still going through it. My husband’s BS have
been maddening the past few weeks and he had his A1C last week… his last one was 6.2, which is really good!
You will get there. We are all pulling for you Hunter. Be vigilant…it will pay off. Also I agree with the age thing, which sometimes makes things difficult as kids are constantly growing and lots of things come into play: body size, muscle distribution, hormones, etc.

Hi Kaci,

You welcomed me to this site awhile back and I was just looking at your page. A belated thank you for the welcome!! I was a diabetic for 30 years diagnosed at the age of 2 I didn’t get my pump until I was in my late 20’s, but I sure do wish I had it sooner!! The control is so much better with a pump although nothing is ever perfect, but I think we all know that. Once you get through the insurance part and get all set up it gets a lot better I know it seems overwhelming at first!! I hope everything works out and that Hunter gets his pump and does GREAT with it!!

Hi Kaci, your children are beautiful ! Love the pictures. My son is 16 and has had diabetes for 3 years now. I can see a transition as time as gone on. Puberty, Honeymoon, et al., We’ve tried the pump and it wasn’t for us. Takes a lot of attention. We did Lantis and Humalog when he first got diagnosed, then the pump, and we’re on a new regimen for a little over a year now. Humalin and Humalog. He has more flexibility in his eating schedule, and believe it or not, his numbers improved. I was shocked ! I’ve notice my son does much better with a routine, i.e., school. When he’s out of school, like over Christmas his numbers were crazy and the same thing last summer. We’re back on track now. Barbara
