I’m a Type 2 diabetic on insulin (MDI). I’ve been on insulin for nine months or so now (Lantus and Novalog). In the beginning I tried to keep my Novalog to no more than 3 or 4 units per meal. I had eliminated sugar and was restricting my carbohydrates. The last month or two I have fallen into some bad habits and have increased my carbohydrates (and consequently, Novalog). As a result, I’ve begun to gain weight, which is not what I want or need to be doing.
I am resolved on going back to no sugar/lowish carbohydrates (about 30 gram per meal) in hopes of losing weight.
As I lose weight, aside from closely monitoring my blood sugar, is there anything in particular I need to do with regard to the number of units I take of the Lantus. When I first started using both Lantus and Novalog, I had a surprise low and it turned out I was taking too much Lantus. Needless to say, I didn’t care for the surprise. How do I guard against it?
I am a T2 on insulin. I’ve had good luck with a low carb diet. In the more than four years since I’ve started insulin I have not gained weight and have actually lost a few pounds.
One thing I would recommend you do is make sure your Lantus is set properly so that you don’t go low or high between meals. One way of adjusting your basal is to do basal testing. Having a properly set basal may also help you lose weight.
Brian, any good suggestions for low carb breakfast, lunch and dinner? I am aware of soymilk, Fage Greek Yogurt, Eggs, avocado, chicken (meat/fish), greens (celery, lettuce, broccoli, kale), cheese. Do you pretty much avoid all grains? and almost all fruits except for berries? I’ve heard of people who eat hot dogs for breakfast and sometimes as snacks. any thoughts?
BTW - This is a great online community. Does anyone know of a group that get together in NYC to also support one another?
