I have been on a low-residue diet for the last 2 days in preparation for colonoscopy. It seems to have all the foods that make my blood sugar spike. I am thinking now of just focusing on protein and canned vegetables. White bread, white rice, etc. don’t work for me. What have you guys done in preparation for colonoscpy? Also the nurse who told me about the insulin dosing etc. before colonoscopy did not seem to realize that this diet could be a problem for people who mostly eat keto. Thanks.
I had a colonoscopy just a few months ago and my instructions were quite different. I certainly didn’t eat any white bread or white rice (Yikes - that would send my bg into orbit). I remember liquid food only for 24 hrs and I used sugar-free gatorade, sugar-free jello, organic broths and other clear liquids. I also sent a patient portal message to my endocrinologist and his instructions were different from the nurse’s in the gastro unit. I followed his advice. Both of them advised apple juice for any lows but I used liquid glucose. It has food dye in it (which you’re supposed to avoid in jello and liquids) but I told the gastro and he said it was fine. Good for you for getting it done. Big thing to check off the preventative medicine and proactive health list!
The last few colonoscopies I’ve had said nothing about “low residue” diets. Instead I was told no food beyond liquids 24 hours prior to the procedure and was given a bowel prep (Go-Lytely) the night before. They did advise no drinks with any coloring. Finally, they also advised stopping insulin as well. I checked with my endocrinologist and kept my pump on, however it is wise to talk to both her and the gastroenterologist ahead of time.
Yeah, I’m not doing this again. I go onto the clear liquid diet tomorrow. and then IT’S OVER!!! YAY!
My last colonoscopy I did similar liquid food only. Was mostly low carb and was able to keep bg in range.
Just the liquid diet for me. Because I only eat plants and eat low fat, my gastroenterologist said that checking me out was easy, because I was so clean inside. TMI?
I just drank the crap they gave me and nearly hurled because it tasted so bad. I didn’t eat anything.
I brought pure cane sugar with me in case I needed it, but I didn’t.
There has to be a better way than the electrolyte crap they give us to drink. Uuugh.
As far as effecting my sugars, it didn’t seem to do anything at all. I just didn’t bolus.
Same for me, I had to drink some awful mix of fluids the night before. I kept pump and cgm on during the procedure. No issue issue with low BGs. But good idea to keep quick carbs nearby. My nurse was also a T1 so she was aware of how to help if help was needed!
