I’m curious: For those of you who use mini glucagon dosing with Gvoke, how much do you use? Or, if you’ve never actually needed it but were taught to use it, how much did they tell you to use? How do you administer it? I have the vial and syringe kit myself. I wasn’t given any specific instructions, so it would be trial and error for me. I’d probably start with a unit or two, if possible. Gvoke is so much more concentrated than the older glucagon kits that drawing up small amounts looks like it’ll be harder, and also other dosing instructions don’t really apply.
It is 5x more concentrated than the original glucagon injection kits!
And the syringe that comes with Gvoke makes it difficult to do micro-injections.
But there is an easy solution. The easiest way to micro-dose is to buy some sterile empty vials. They are pretty cheap, only a few dollars. You can get them on Amazon. (Amazon.com : sterile vial) Get small ones, like 1ml or 2ml. Inject your Gvoke into the vial.
Also get some syringes. Yes, you probably have insulin syringes already, but for the glucagon it is best to go into the muscle. So buy some syringes with 1/2 inch needles if you don’t already have those.
Now you have everything you need to take a very small and easily measured amount of the Gvoke!
As for the amount, it really depends on how much of a BG rise you want. 1-2 units won’t do a whole lot, but it can make a small difference. If you are very low, 5 units would probably be needed.
Try it and see!
This might get you started.
In addition to the video the comments on that page have info on dosing.
Thank you! Sounds good. Do you still need the vial if you get the gvoke vial and syringe kit?
@Ray36,
No, you wouldn’t need a vial if you get their vial kit.
But I would recommend using an insulin syringe with a long needle. Measuring out an exact dose would be easier with an insulin syringe. I don’t think the syringes they give you are marked very well.
I used it once. I took 1/2 unit (using an insulin syringe) for a low at 50 that wouldn’t come up w glucose tabs. BG promptly went up to 130. I haven’t used it since. I’ve heard/understood that once the vial is used it loses its potency fairly quickly. Time will tell.
