Mobile Update for T:slim X2 Finally Approved!

Does require both a software and a pump update, free to all in-warranty customers. (So I’ll have to wait.). It’s approved for both Android and IOS.

They’re doing two rounds of limited release before the big launch this summer, I guess looking for tech issues. With past updates, though, you could go in through the portal and request three update before any big release announcements. I wonder if that will still apply.

What’s really exciting to me is that this means they’ll finally file on the Mobi, which is built on this connectivity platform!

Thanks @Robyn_H I put in a request to be notified.

It’s a bummer though that it’s currently limited to two phones that are 2 generations back. Hopefully they will quickly expand the approved phone list.

Definitely. I was really surprised by that, too. I assumed the major hold-ups with the FDA was proving security across a lot of different devices.

I’m sure more devices will be added soon, but I was really hoping for no specific device limitations, since the current version of T:connect doesn’t have any.

I assume the app can be hacked to circumvent the phone requirement, just like someone clever did with the Dexcom G6 app. That will be the easiest solution. Trust at your own risk, but I would have zero qualms about using that.

There’s another option, too, which I’ve been considering anyway… It’s not for the faint of heart, though! My 3 year old OnePlus 6 is still holding up awesome and I have no intention of upgrading any day soon, but it’s no longer supported with security updates and whatnot. I’ve been considering flashing a custom ROM to the phone (basically wiping out the manufacturer installed operating system and installing one I have full control over). I’m leaning towards the LegacyOS one. One of the perks of unlocking a phone like this is that you can actually make it believe it’s a different brand/model of phone, by modifying the files. So when the app queries the system information, it will see what I program it to see. It should bypass the app’s demands. I think. In theory. I can’t actually experiment until it’s launched and I’m back in warranty.

This first roll out is disappointing in that it limits the smart phones to one i and one android model. I’m on a S10 and just got updated to version 12 in the past week. I can’t imagine S20s are not already updated to v 12. I will be watching for an expanded list come summer.

Yes, this is going to be problematic if they are not out in front of these updates.

Well, here I come again, technically way behind the curve! Sorry for being such a Luddite.

It seems to me this is saying that with this update, once I load it onto my phone and my pump, I could tell the pump to give me a bolus by telling my phone to tell my pump to give me a bolus! Huh? Two electronic steps to do the one thing I can do now with one electronic step.

Am I missing something, or is this what this thread is saying?

Now here’s the part of my Luddite-ness you’ll be most surprised at! I almost never lug my phone with me anywhere! Often I forget to turn it on! Much less keep it charged. So why would this phone software feature mean anything to me at all? I mean, all of us who wear the Tandem pump have to, by definition, carry it with us 24/7. So what in the world is stopping each of us from just pushing a couple buttons on the pump we have with us 24/7 whether or not there’s now some magic software that lets us do it on the phone?!

Really, am I missing something earthshaking? Or is this, for me and my iPhone ignorance, a no never mind?

It’s a no never mind.
For me, the less inconvenience the better. It’s possible a bit easier to grab my phone than remove the pump especially when it’s in its little pouch.
I’d love to be able to do everything from my watch!

Many of us, especially women, I would imagine, wear our pumps in locations that are not easily accessible in public. Being able to give myself a bolus from my phone would be very convenient.

For you, if definitely sounds like a “no nevermind”.

Nowadays though, the general public are hardwired to their mobile phones. It’s been Tandem’s must requested feature for a while.

No doubt about it, I’m one of those hard-wired to the mobile people, but I’m kinda with you in regards to the T:slim. It’s entirely because of how I wear it, though. I keep it tucked between my breasts, so it’s literally inches from my face and easily accessible anytime just by looking down. If I wore it tucked away somewhere less accessible, I could understand the desire. It’s also a matter of discretion, since many aren’t comfortable flashing their medical devices.

My personal excitement for this is purely because I want the darned upcoming Mobi pump, which requires mobile integration (or a PDM at the minimum), since it doesn’t have a screen. I don’t imagine personal device compatibility will be a deal breaker, though. They always planned to have a PDM option, which I wouldn’t even need to carry. I’d only need it to adjust pump settings, since I could still see my pump/insulin stats on the T:connect app, and bolus directly from the mini-pump via a button just like the “quick bolus” feature on the T:slim
.

Ok, that’s a wrinkle I didn’t think of. I carry my pump in a shirt pocket and just pull it out whenever I need to but I see how that might not make sense for everyone. Thx.

Got it. Thx for explaining it.

Ok. Thx.

I’m glad to know I can ignore this update and I’m glad it does help so many of the rest of you.

I personally don’t want the bolus from phone, but would likely still update after others flush out any bugs. There are likely other changes and improvements besides just phone bolus that i might use.

The tslim will get the add of bolus from the phone ap.
It’s a trial run for the mobi which will also allow setting basal rates and all the settings that are normally done on the pump itself.

I will def use the bolus feature from my phone

Does anyone know if all alarms (both pump and CGM) can be acknowledged from the phone? That is certainly a feature I’m looking forward to.

Thanks,

John

This is potentially a huge convenience for parents of small children with T1D or like myself who manages my wife’s pump because she has advanced dementia (started when she was only 56). You might be surprised how cumbersome managing someone else’s pump can be especially if you are a lot taller than them!

Agree!!
For me, I’m not attached at the hip to my phone, but pump is always within inches!!

Sorry to hear of your wife’s diagnosis.

I will turn 56 tomorrow, and I was in a meeting today and couldn’t remember my zip code for like a min.

I notice my memory has changed a little. I hope I don’t get dementia though.

I don’t think there is any way to prepare for that. It has to be worse for the spouse. I’m glad she has a dedicated husband

I don’t think you have anything to worry about Timothy. My wife was stricken with an acute case of ketoacidosis which is what apparently initiated her multiple brain dementia’s. Also who knows if she was genetically predisposed…

You might attribute your brief lapse to maybe just being tired or something similar.

Thanks for your kind comment!
