Hey y’all. I’m a T2 on the forum but I have a question about my 4yo son. Last night he asked me to test his sugar b/c he saw me doing it. I did it and he was 129 (2 hours after dinner). I know this is not HIGH, but it seems a little higher to me than it should. Am I overreacting or is this a flag?
I can understand your concern, but I think it is not a reason to worry.
Keep in mind that blood sugars are +/- 20%. So his blood sugar could have actually been 105 and measured at 129.
BUT this is a good reason to check his blood sugar periodically (especially if he doesn’t mind). May also be a good idea to test him about an hour after having some candy or sweets. This would be the highest possible reading. So it would tell you if something is up.
Keep us posted!
P.S. My husband once tested at 140, which concerned us, but we checked many other times and it only happened once.
No big deal unless it’s a fasting level (more than 6 hours) taken first thing in the morning. This wasn’t. If you really want to keep an eye on his sugars, do an occasional check first thing in the a.m. before breakfast - usual level for a child that age is ~80, or so says my son’s ped-endo.
I took notice that my youngest was drinking a lot more than usual so I waited about 4 hours after dinner and cheked her bg and it was 156. I did not report this to the doctor because I am not sure it is signifigant. She is still drinking a lot but has no other symptoms.
Why would you not report this to the doctor? If it is not significant, he’ll tell you not to worry. But if it is significant, the sooner you tend to it the better.
I was going to check a fasting bg before I got worried or upset. If the fasting is elevated I will be in contact with the doctor.
Momto3,
Fasting & two hours after meals is good. I hope not, but she could have been higher at two hours than at four hours.
Fasting doesn’t tell the whole picture. There’s Phase I & Phase II insulin response. Some people have good fasting, but are high after meals. Many don’t get diagnosed because their fasting reading is ok.
Hi Scott,
Non-diabetics can go a bit high after meals, but they return to normal quickly. When you test him again, check again in about 45 min-1 hour.
Your 4 year old is better than my husband. He’s let test him only 3-4 times.
I know from my own expierence that my fasting are much better than my 2 hours. I just figured that with kids they have an acute onset of diabetes with total lack of insulin wich in turn would cause very high numbers all the time.
Not sure that we know what acute onset really means since doctors & parents don’t often know until the child’s really sick. Is it really acute & sudden, or has BG been slowly creeping up for a while? Kids eat a lot, they go through growth spurts when they grow & lose weight. It’s hard to tell.
You have a good point. I have heard that most kids are really sick and that is what is normal for a child with overt diabetes. I guess I am judging my child by what is normal for most kids with overt diabetes. I will keep on top of this and be on alert for any other signs.
Just keep testing him. That’s the best indication. You can also buy an at home A1c test at drugstores.
I think you are definitely overreacting. I would be more concerned if the 129 was a fasting glucose number. If you are worried you could ask your grandchild’s pedi to test for D at the yearly physical. I think this is a good idea anyway.
