My 65'th Anniversary

Congratulations Richard! What an inspiration to all of us- Happy anniversary!

Congratulations Richard. Still not sure about this celebration of our diagnosis. This is all new to me since joining up to the D-OC - I don’t even really celebrate my birthday that much - it must just be me  We’re forever young right with having juvenille diabetes? I like to think so

Congrats Richard! That is just so wonderful to hear. I’ll be celebrating my 50th type 1 next year. I can remember when I was diagnosed they had little hope that most of us would only live to our 30’s. What a blessing!!

Anna, I don’t celebrate having been type 1 so long. I am celebrating having lived that long and still having good health!! I agree we long term type 1’s are forever young. Thanks for your comments!

Thanks LeeAnne.

Thanks Linda. You will be eligible for the 50 year Joslin medal next year, if you are interested. I can give you a link that will tell all you need to know about applying for the medal. Joslin gives type 1 diabetics very attractive medals for 50 and 75 years. Let me know if you are interested in the link. I will be eligible for the 75 year medal in 10 more years.

Wow! Happy Anniversary.

Along with those ā€œgood genesā€ I suspect there are a lot of ā€œgood habitsā€ that you’ve developed over the years.

Cheers,
Corinna

Yes please send me the link. Thank you!

Congratulations! What an achievement - thank you for sharing this information as it gives all of us some hope… Good for you Richard!

Let me know if this does not give you the right material.

Thanks Corinna and Dramaqueen!

Corinna, I always did what the doctors said to do, but they had very little advice to give until the 1980s.My first 40 years of success was based on something other than good habits alone. All of us long term diabetics without complications wonder how we did it.

SO awesome to hear, Richard!!! Thanks for inspiring and giving us all hope.

Warm Wishes,

Great to hear. I have been having Diabetes since July of 82, a few days before my 11th birthday. So far everything is good.
Good to hear your inspiring story:))

Thanks Jeggers, Pam and Jenny. My more complete story is told in my book, published in March of this year. Here is the link:

Congratulations. I know the feeling . I just celebrated 50 years, and was diagnosed when I was 5 in 1960. I too have no idea why I do not have any real lasting effects, if you don’t count my joints being a little stiff. I think we need to tell people to live life to the fullest as much as possible, and maybe that’s the secret. I am sure you don’t let your disease be an excuse , nor do I. I have raced motorcycles, raised two boys, run my own law practice, traveled to Europe 5 times, 3 riding a motorcycle, been in political office, been in 35 mile bicycle tours, been on TV , well you get the picture.
Thanks again for your wonderful message,

Melindalaw

Melinda, what you have accomplished during your 50 years of diabetes is truly fantastic!!! Is it ok for me to say that I am proud of you? You are now eligible for the Joslin 50 year medal. It is a very nice medal. If you are interested, let me know and I will send you a link that tells how to apply for it.

Congratulations Richard!

Yes and thank you. i think the web cite has it.It is extremely gratifying to hear about other people like you who have had diabetes for a long time and also have and are living a full life. Thanks again and congratulations to you.

Melinda, the website does not give all that you need to know if you are going to apply for the medal. Here is the link I referred to previously:
