Well today i went to a my doctors visit he was surprised because my a1c was a 7.8 which he said could be better but its not horrible then he went over my results for my kidneys he said that i might need dialysis. I told him forget about it i will NEVER do diaylsis he said my kidneys are spilling a lot of protein but according to your dexcom monitor your sugars are not horribly out of control. The question is how bad does dialysis hurt? Will your kidneys get better with dialysis and no teansplant? When i asked him these questions he didn’t give me a direct answer so i kind of got frustrated with him.
Oh eric, I am so sorry to hear that you are facing the possibility of going through dialysis. I don't have any personal experience with this procedure, so I can't tell you if it hurts. And I don't know if your kidneys can heal or regenerate.
Please educate yourself, especially if your doctor isn't good about giving you direct answers to your questions. You have a right to know what's going on with your body and to understand what your treatment options are.
I've always found the Mayo Clinic website really helpful and reliable. Here are a couple of links you might want to look at.
Chronic kidney failure: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/kidney-failure/DS00682
Acute kidney failure: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/kidney-failure/DS00280
Hemodialysis: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hemodialysis/MY00281
Peritoneal dialysis: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/peritoneal-dialysis/MY00282
Eric, I understand your frustfation and anxiety! You need a LOT more information, for sure. Like, is there anything you can do to stop the damage to your kidneys? Would it make a difference, say, to go on an ultra-low carb diet for a while? That's guaranteed to lower your BG very quickly. Will it help your kidney function, too?
If you do have to have dialysis, will that be for a little while, or ongoing? Do you have to go the hospital or can you have it at home, at night? That's available in many places, now, and seems to be easier for people to handle. What, exactly, will happen if you don't accept dialysis? How long will it take? Kidney failure is not a nice thing to go through, but dialysis is very unpleasant, too.
I hope you can get the advice and support you need as soon as possible.
My understanding is that hemodialysis hurts, but that peritoneal doesn't, beyond the initial surgery to create a port for the dialysis. Kidneys occasionally recover on dialysis, but not commonly (in most studies I've read, 1-2 percent of people who went on dialysis went off of it because of having their kidney function recover).
There is a group here on tudiabetes for those with kidney disease and many of the members have had kidney failure and have been on dialysis or have had transplants (or both).
