Ok, so what if I am 41, I love Halloween! I wouldn't say I have always pigged out on candy but I like to buy myself some treaty treaty to snack on this time of year.
But well...oh well, it is different this year! Wah!
No apple cider! No candy corn, no suckers....the list can go on and on.
But I just also found that that Smarties are only 6 carbs a roll and Tootise rolls is only 4.6. So I definatley going out and buying some Smarties.
Now, some of this stuff I don't normally eat (being vegan) but I find the vegan and natural alternatives I buy are still full of pure sugar so they are still no-nos. It is bad enough I can ever have cotton candy again but why do not they not make more diabetic friendly candy? I do have some chocolate but I like the hard candies too.
Last year, I had Mary Janes, root beer candies and a gorgeous Halloween gourmet lollipop and some others as my special treats. And apple cider from the farmer market. And geez, do I even want to start thinking about Christmas (no more candy canes!).
I am sad. What do you guys do for Halloween to make it better?
I am T2 and no inuslin so I can't 'cover' my carbs.
I might just have to keep my Halloween fun in altering my Chewbacca costume this year! :)
Why don’t you make yourself some chocolate peanut butter cups, like the ones I have on the recipe I posted on my blog earlier…? You can even use a silicone Halloween candy mold to make em, if you want. I saw one cheap at Hobby Lobby that I might buy. (By the way, my hubby makes them with no cream, and you could prolly use some Omega 3 margarine spread, without having to use animal byproducts).
There are tons of low carb candy recipes to make things you like. Using natural extract flavorings, it’s amazing the things you can create.
There’s diabetic candy, but most contain sugar alcohols that can cause gastric upset, not to mention all the coloring. Some people react to sugar alcohols as they do to pure sugar.
Halloween doesn’t bother me because I’ve never liked sugary candy. Now chocolate is another story:)
I am not really a making my own candy type of person. I remember that I bought the ingredients to make some candy once (I can’t remember what it was now - oh, I think I was gonna make vegan natural dye candy corn) and I never did (mostly because I found out I had d right after).
There are vegan version of chocolate peanut butter cups but they are not very tasty (meaing like Reeses). Plus it is only me eating this stuff which is why I don’t want to go and make it myself. It would take me forever to eat a batch of it! I have three huge chocolate bars and it will take me months to go through them because I can only eat a few squares at a time! (and trying to fit in with my other foods and not overcarb it!)
I was hoping to find something I could buy (even if not vegan and natural) for a slight treat once and while this month. Obviously I will have space it out.
Brach/s and See’sCandy both make sugar free treats. Whitman’s also has a SF sampler. Of course they do have sugar alcohol’s so you cant just eat them like free foods, but i have them quit a bit as occasional treats without blowing your BG through the roof. Check around your local grocery store (sometime the SF treats are in a separate section away from the other candies). i have found everything from SF Oreo’s, Jelly Bellies, Red vines chocolates etc. Just got to hunt around a little bit.
Oh boy! Marshmellow peeps! They have these in Halloween form now too. I saw a Marshmellow gravestone in a store the other day. It was gray colored. I have also seen ghosts and pumpkins.
As you know I’m a Type 1 and have been since 10 My oldest took Type 1 at 11. Ok here’s what my mom did for me and what I did for her after she took Type 1. Marsmellow Treats. You know the kind that you make with marshmellows and rice krispies. I don’t knowe about you liking them but I LOVE’EM Now you can buy them in the store too. Do that all the time.
LoL! So I assume you have seen the newest Hallowen editions? They are coming out with the craziest stuff.
Peeps must be at the highest end of the carb scale - I remember how sugary and crunchy they were. I used to save the beak part for last - I used to fell bad biting the off. I don’t know if anything could be more sugary except maybe rock candy and Lik-m-Aid! (boy, do I miss those white Lik-m-Aid sticks! ha)
I went to this showing in MD. One of the exhibits used peeps. OMG, it was hysterical. They had peeps in dioramas depicting scenes from famous movies, from TV shows, bands. I about died laughing. I wanted to take photos, but of course this was prohibited.
It was so clever. Everyone there was pointing to the different little peep dramas & laughing. Was several years ago. Each diorama was made by a different artist. Some were quite elaborate.
i am a type 2 on meds only and the way i ‘cover’ my carbs is to do a bike ride. I carry those candies with me on my ride. I need about 30 grams of carbs for a ride so whatever that may be on candies I put on a zip lock back and bring it with me. The reason i use candies is because the quick rise in bg. I did not bring any candies with me today and i paid for it on my bike ride. I went from 128 to 64 in 20 minutes. Adrenaline kept me from getting the shakes.
Usually I put them on my pocket and pop them in every 5 to 10 minutes. This takes time to achieve and an understanding of what your reaction to different carbs.
