My Two Cents...again

this topic was closed by the admins before I could post this reply, but I wanted to get this off my chest

Man has this topic has been beaten to death.

Now for all you Type 2’s getting all butt hurt and whining about Type 1’s wanting a higher degree of separation from you and your disease, consider this…

Not all Asian people are Chinese. Not all Hispanic people are Mexican. Unfortunately our society views the world with blatant ignorance, and that’s the way T1’s are viewed…its simply wrong.

It’s like being from Japan, but being called “Kinda-Chinese” or “Type B Chinese.” It sounds so ridiculous, I’m actually offending myself as I type it.

Anyway, this is about culture. Type 1’s and Type 2’s have a different culture about how and why they take care of themselves. You don’t have to believe me, but ask yourself this…if Type 2’s outnumber Type 1’s by millions in society, then why do Type 1’s seem to outnumber Type 2’s by so much on tudiabetes.com?

Answer: It’s culture.

We as Type 1’s have a right to desire a better understanding of our culture in society…and for the record, diabetes is not just diabetes…it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that.

lol… I hate when people come up to me and say… “my grandfather got diabetes because he ate too much sugar… but after he lost weight and took pills it went away, maybe you should try that”

uggh type 1 and 2 are looked at as the same thing so many times by people, when they are completely different for the most part…

i liked the
Not all Asian people are Chinese. Not all Hispanic people are Mexican.

great way to put it!
and i agree w/ everything you said

understandable but isn’t the title or label type 1 enough to distinguish the two?

maybe diabetes category could be “all people who watch their sugar” while type 1 and 2 are what they are respectively.

Completely different Jill Hartley?

Type 1 and 2 go high they can die from DKA
Type 1 and 2 go low they go into a coma and can die from insulin shock

Bottom line is DIABETES can kill, mame, blind both Type 1 and Type 2

Neither type 1 nor type 2 “deserve” or “ask for” DIABETES

Type 1’s your pancreas is shot… done… kaput… makes no insulin
Type 2’s Pancreas is not working to full potential , maybey not making enough insulin, and with the insulin it does make, the cells are stubborn and wont open up because they are insulin resistant.

Type 1 and Type 2 need insulin or extra insulin (or in some type 2’s pills to help open up the cells in order to utilize the suagr for energy or to prod the pancreas into making more insulin)
Another Bottom Line: Type 1 and Type 2 need insulin to let the cell walls open so they can receive sugar for energy… Otherwise it just dumps the excess sugar into the blood stream causing havoc in BOTH Type 1 and Type 2

You tell me the "COMPLETELY " different… Looks pretty much the same to me

Why all of a sudden is it about labels?? This isn’t about status, which one is ‘better’ or “who is better”

It is an eating dissorder,

BOTTOM LINE:
Neither Type 1 nor Type 2 can utilize carbs properly. And will most likely die sooner than a “normal” (There is another label for ya) human being.

Here we go again.

Craig you need to lay off those Negativity Sandwiches.

Also, you need to do your homework and respect the facts. Diabetes is not an eating disorder.

Craig, it’s not “all of a sudden” about labels. It’s about being mislabeled in the eyes of society since diagnosis…which means 18 years for me.

Nice try, but your bottom line is pure nonsense…I’m going to live a long healthy and sexy life just to prove you wrong. Thanks for the inspiration!

Good luck… That was a waste of my time
sorry to waste yours.
Last u hear from me

Yeah well maybe think twice before you go picking on any more Type 1’s with your science fiction facts.

Ok guys, come on.

We all have it hard at times, I’ve been mislabled for 40 years. Hell, I wasn’t “supposed” to live past 15 of those. There are differences. without doubt. The day to day worries can be different, but we all want the same thing. To live. Not just to “survive” diabetes, but to have a life. Let’s just try to help each other do this

Yes Scott, you’re right. And utmost respect to you for your success in living with Type 1 for so many years.

I’m just a little fired up right now I guess. I need to lay off the 5 hour Energy’s.

Who cares what society thinks…they will never understand “Diabetes” in general…but WE all have it…why is it a competition, just help each other…Type 1 or Type 2.
My Mom died of complications of Type 1 and My Dad died of complications of Type 2…,Which one one of my parents “DIED BETTER?” give it a rest. and just care about one another!

It really isn’t about competition. I don’t think I’ve made any comments that have anything to do with competition, but if I have just let me know.

If people in society don’t understand the fundamental differences between Type 1 and Type 2, then they do not understand me as a Type 1 correctly. Nobody likes being misunderstood, and there is nothing wrong with seeking better understanding in the society which you exist.

My issue is why certain T2’s get so offended when T1’s want to talk about these differences and how, at times, we’ve been treated unfairly because of them.

One Love.

Life is not fair, whether you have a disease or not. But, we will get nowhere with diabetes education in society if it doesnt start with compasion and understanding for your fellow diabetic…type 1 or type 2 . Unfairly because of “them”? No, unfairly because if you dont have the disease of diabetes…you dont understand it. Plain and simple.

Robyn, please reread my previous post.

Unfairly because of “them”…“them” is referring to the differences between Type 1’s and Type 2’s, not to Type 2 diabetics themselves. Please don’t make me seem like some sort of Type 2 basher because I am not, and you can ask anyone that knows me, I am not that kind of person.

You know what? Nobody knew what AIDS was or how you could really get it before the 1980’s. It was one of the most misunderstood diseases out there. But because of education, society as a whole became more aware of the reality of AIDS and HIV, and now we are better off as a whole because we are educated.

I like to think positively and believe that with greater awareness, society can always change for the better.

True…and I dont think you are a type 2 basher. It is just a very sensitive subject and I like everyone to get along and help each other. No hard feeling on my end. Education is priceless, I agree.

Thanks Robyn, you know I love ya.

Who loves ya, Baby?

Love ya Debbs!

I think the key problem is ignorance and lack of reputable resources. Although I agree with your analogy, that we can’t clump the two together due to their aparent similarities, however, people can find adequate research to be able to distinguish a japanese person from a chinese one. However, not only is society ignorant about the disorder, but doctors seem to be perplexed as well. Research on both types of diabetes is inconsistent and unclear. The point is that we need to spread more awareness about diabetes in general. Although I get offended by people’s comments, I take the time to clarify, and hope the right word is spread. I hope to one day be able to spread the information to students in schools. Parents and children with diabetics in schools may be knowledgable, however I find little informaiton provided to nurses and staff about what it means to be a diabetic.
