As u know from previos post im a newly diagnosed diabetic...ive managed to catch a tummy bug and i cant keep any food down do i still inject the same amount of insulin if any..i dont know wot to do any advice will be much appreciated thanks x
Are you testing your glucose? If you are high because you are sick, give a little correction. If you can’t keep anything down, and your glucose is good. Being sick tends to raise your glucose. Depending upon what your BG is, you should inject if necessary. If you can’t eat, it’s okay to go a little higher than your range to avoid hypoglycemia. If you take Lantus or some other long-acting, I’d give that as you normally do.
thankyou so much for replying so quckly been worrying myself stupid as to wot to do!!!
Get yourself a ‘sick kit’ (I learned this the hard way!) - apple juice boxes, pudding cups of your favorite flavour, etc. Things you can easily eat and bland enough to keep down so that you don’t go too low. Test your blg’s often. Keep hydrated. Get medical help if you need it.
I once got really sick while on vacation in Mexico. My bgl’s keep crashing to dangerous lows 9not uncommon if I get sick) and I didn’t have anything on hand. I had family who did a shopping trip to the local grocery store for me, thankfully.
Oh, you’ve triggered my Mommy reflex! First, test, test, test, blood sugar AND ketones too, more often than you would normally, and keep track of how your blood glucose responds to what food you do get in. Pete’s right that it’s OK to inject as needed if you’re high, and actually it’s important that you do so to avoid developing ketones (with no food in your system, your body is going to start burning fat for energy, and you’ll need to have that insulin on board to prevent it from moving toward DKA). And as Maureen says, STAY HYDRATED - that’s another key to avoiding DKA.
As for how to get food in you without triggering another round at the porcelain throne, well… here are some suggestions. Gingerale (flat) is good, or ginger tea with honey (ginger is an old Chinese remedy for upset stomach). My mom used to give me Jell-o dissolved in hot water and that also seemed to work wonders, so try that too (just remember that you’ll be taking the full packet’s worth of carbs). Saltines are good for nausea too, and so is rice, and it may be that they’ll be less likely to trigger a round of yakking than something sweet. Or, try some chamomile tea, with or without honey. Chamomile is good for settling a nauseous stomach; both it and honey have some antibacterial properties, too (and it may help you sleep).
Whatever you manage to keep down, keep eating very small amounts of food every hour or so, and give yourself insulin for them when you’re sure they’ll stay down. If you throw up after you’ve had some insulin and think you’re going to go low, remember that you don’t need to actually SWALLOW the glucose to get it in you - that’s important if you’re nauseous - just holding some juice, sugar, frosting, or a crushed glucose tab between your cheek and gum will get some glucose into your blood through the mucous membranes. And, there’s always your glucagon shot - use it if you find yourself going very low and you’re unable to stomach anything that could bring your BG back up. Glucagon will stop the activity of insulin and bring you back up. And DO reach out to your endocrinologist if you think you’re in trouble and just can’t stop vomiting - he/she might be able to set you up with an antiemetic. We use a liquid form of Zofran and it’s saved us a number of times when a tummy bug hits.
Good luck! Hope you feel better soon!
If you cant keep anything down, you need to ask the doctor for a pill that stops nausea and vomitting. You can even try some motion sickness pills. You also have to give yourself more insulin and check your keaton levels. I use a meter that checks your blood and tells you if you have keatons.
Do you know how much insulin to use for a correction to lower high BG? Ilness does raise BG & sometimes quite a lot. You may need to take correction shots to keep from going high, Take your basal & take rapid acting according to your meter.
Stay hydrated with water, decaf tea, broth, or anything without sugar. Sucking on ice cubes helps without upsetting your stomach. Dehydration raises BG as well, Test a lot.
Read the label for any medicine for nausea because many are syrups with sweetener.
Hope you’re feeling better soon!
