New features for OmniPod - Need your input

Can someone point me to the post regarding the new features of OmniPod ?

Thanks

PDA that has a touch screen and a screen that is easy to read when outdoors in sunlight.

Black pod and hypofix tape. Would look more like a cordless ipod nano on your arm.

Way to go Pete! “All I want is everything!” Simple, to the point.

John - go to the top of this page…its there! If not, go to the beginning of this thread!

I agree with KcF…The Kindle now has a “Sun Friendly” screen…we could use somehing like that.

I realize that I am somewhat idealistic and unreasonable. I just keep throwing it up and seeing what sticks. Please make getting a smart phone worth it!!!

You would always think you’re bleeding. I’d scare the bejeesus out of myself every time I took of my shirt. The first thing to go being the short-term memory.

I haven’t started on the Pod, yet. Hopefully next week. I been using the Accu-Chek Compact glucometer for about the last 3 years. I chose it because of the drum (don’t have to handle strips) and the attached lancet device. (Less to have to carry). It has worked real well and is easy to use. I would like to see this incorporated into their PDM. The fewer things that I have to carry and keep track of, the easier and less of a burden, management of my diabetes is. I know this probably comes down to production cost, but it would still be a nice feature. I’m sure that I’ll come up with more after I start using the system.

Cheers
KC

Instead of showing me that I have more than 50 units in the resevoir, (+50), show me what I actually have. How hard could that be?
Put somewhere in my history, what my actual IOB is AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME!. Not that I feel strongly about that one at all or anything.
When we go to integration with Dexcom, (which I also have) GIVE ME MORE THAN TWO FEET!. If I can’t get more distance with this HUGE PDM, then is it really worth it when it’s tied to me 24/7?

either a spreadsheet or the software - CoPilot make it a real PDA/M

WHAT not everyone wants to be an iPhone owner!?!?! LOL just kidding! I had head of someone working on a case/cover that plugs into the phone but is a glucometer! years away though like all things lol

Shocker right!!? Maybe Apple and Insulet need to get together and make an i-omnipod …just what the diabetic world needs. Video chat via iphone with your doctor all while checking your sugar, giving a bolus, and adjusting your basal rates at the same time.

It matched my toe nails!!

Yes, I understand.
Remember that a lot of these feature requests would make the product VERY expensive. They are alll possible, but were left out because COST is very important to be able to compete against Medtronic and other gigantic pharmaceutical companies.
Example:
waterproof, shockproof PDM = VERY expensive.
bluetooth-enabled pod = VERY expensive.

Plus, some of the feature requests don’t go together:
smaller devices + more mechanical features (shockproof, removable reservoir) = VERY difficult to combine.

There’s ONE sensor inside the pod that tell the device when you’ve filled it past 50 units. As you use insulin, the sensor can tell it’s back at the 50 U point. From then on, it just keeps track of what’s been delivered and subtracts it from 50.
The trick is: How can it tell how much insulin you pushed into it? It would require multiple sensors and a VERY FANCY sensing system inside the pod. Is it hard to do? Probably not, but it would make it more expensive.

Two remarks:

  1. Most software features are more realistic in the shorter term (1 year) and would not increase the product’s price.
  2. Making things smaller, faster, waterproof, shockproof, removable reservoir, bluetooth-enable etc. If all these things were done the PDM would end up costing THOUSANDS and the pod HUNDREDS of dollars. Only in the longer term (a few years from now, as technology evolves) these mechanical/electronic features could be implemented without increasing the price.

Replacing the PDM with a SmartPhone (Android, Apple, etc) requires making the pod a bluetooth device, which would make it VERY EXPENSIVE and/or require major re-design.

The Solo Insulin pump is smaller than the OmniPod and has the ability to detach from its base. I believe that it reuseable for 3 months??? There was a prior discussion and comparison to our OmniPod. I requested a sample out of curiosity. It also has the ability to bolus from the pump. My initial opinion was that it didn’t seem to be that substantial. Have no idea when it’s available here or what it might cost. I posted a side by side picture a while back.

I also wonder sometimes, and I am sure this would be a big cost issue, but would people benefit from different length cannula’s? I’m not sure the logistics of it, but I know with the insulin pens there are multiple sizes pen needles to choose from. I often think I would have far fewer absorption issues if the cannula were shorter.?

Good and realistic feature requests!
