New foster mom to 9yo with Type 1--lower A1C?

I know this a very late response to the topic but I ran into it as I was looking on info about fostering Type 1 children. I applaud your dedication to taking on the care of this girl and as a type 1 parent understand your concerns. I can tell you that perhaps the mom was not given the best education on this disease sometimes where you get care can determine the outcome. When my little girl was diagnosed I was told not to deny her anything because it would have a reversed effect later. The doctor said their biggest problem by diabetic kids comes in the teenage years where they rebelled against all the rules of diabetes. If you allow them to have it in moderation they can learn to have control over their meals and see what works for them. As far as the apple let have the joy of bitting into it with the condition she takes a bolus. It’s really hard for older kids to break from habits.
