NEW GROUP Diabetes Photo Museum

Hey TU! Hot off the press…I created a brand spanking new group here today, it’s called the Diabetes Photo Museum. I’ve noticed after surfing the internet for Diabetes photo’s of yesteryear, there are bits and pieces scattered all over the place…but no place that has organized photo’s.

I’m completely fascinated by the history of Diabetes (especially photo’s). For me to see how far we have come with diabetes care, absolutely blows my mind. So if you or someone you know has Diabetes photo’s (pre- 2000), please tell them about my lil’ old group.

I love this idea danny way cool! I love history and have collected some old photos from differ. sources and will have to st them I am so in. I swear you have the coolest ideas sometimes.

my T1 friend is 49 and was first diagnosed at 2 years old - with his parents giving him shots at that age.
he started his owm injections at about 12 years.
he said as far as he can remember, they used to ‘boil’ the syringes for re-use.
i would love to see a pic of those needles/syringes from back then. anybody have them ?
my mother is a T2, and injects with the modern pens!

Calling our writer Richard157 !!..where are you ??

oh my goodness i have never seen a bottle of U10. I have heard of U 20, that my aunt took in an investigational study but i had no idea that U10 ever existed. Thanks, now that is an awesome picture. thanks

my mom boiled her syringes for years. She used u70 insulin and one day she broke her syringes, she cried, because she could not afford new ones. She actually bought a new set on a payment plan at the pharmacy. iu will never forget how relived she was.

Awesome project!

Afraid I don’t have any photos to contribute. Have a T1 friend diagnosed over 33 years ago. Will check if he has any.

Seeing pics of glass syringes with huge needles always makes me cringe.

Michael,

Here’s one from 1937 http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/vintage-b-d-1937-glass-insulin-syringe. A collector’s item.

When I was researching insulin pumps, I came across a picture of a model from the past on wikipedia. That puppy was 2 1/2 feet long.

Interesting group Danny.

Here’s a pic of the first glucose meter. Weighed 3 lbs, cost over $500. Intended for use by doctors. Dr. Bernstein was one of the first to use it for home use & he advocated for personal glucometers.

Been looking for the meter that uses glass plates. Dr. B mentioned using this on one of his podcasts. He said it’s huge, expensive & very accurate.

You da man for the job!

thanks gerri. i just checked it out.
yes, i am familiar with these now.
actually, they are still around !
yes we have them at the universities, and we referr to them simply as ‘glass syringes’ (its the chemists who tend to use them in their various applications these days.
and yes, the stainless steel needles are still around the place at universities, but i think these are just remnants from the past.
thanks gerri !

I feel Bad about my Mom getting rid of all our Diabetes stuff a few years after I left home. She only has the enamel container left that she kept our Insulin vials, glass syringes and cotton balls in. I got rid of my stuff also through the years. I can’t for the Life of me find a photo of my first meter kit. I was so Happy and Proud of it. I’ll continue looking. I gave it away about 7 years ago. I thought I had my first picker also but haven’t run across it yet.

Great to have a “Diabetes Equipment Museum” though. A Clever idea as usual, on your part.

Okay just for the record I am so thankful for my mini med pump now I mean we always say we don’t want to be tied down but lordy I know that one had to be a back breaker.

I am off work today so let me see if I can’t help you with finding him danny

Danny I found 870allamerican he looks kinda old ( sorry allamerican don’t mean it in a bad way geeze I am going to get hammered for this one )
