New Medtronic Pump coming to the market?

Hi Everyone,

Heard in another forum that a CDE recommended to a patient to wait until august to get her pump, as Medtronic was coming up with a new model.

Has anyone heard anything?

This is what I know and I just got this info earlier this week. Medtronic is coming out with a new pump and it is called the “Patch Pump.” It is currently undergoing FDA approval and they hope to have it out next year but who knows if that will happen. It is a tubeless pump like the Omnipod. There are supposed to be some new features that the Omnipod doesn’t have. One of them being that you are supposed to be able to bolus right from the pump. That way if you forget, lose or break the controller you can still bolus. It is also supposed to be flatter than the Omnipod and have a removable insulin cartridge so you don’t waste all that insulin. Medtronic is also aware that Omnipod users have issues with their pods falling off so that is being addressed as well. It will also work with their CGMS system.

Personally it sounds like the Patch Pump will not be disposable and that you will put an infusion set in and then hook up the pump over it which makes sense and creates a lot less waste which ties into the removable insulin cartridge.

The nice part about Medtronic is that when they come out with this pump, current Minimed users will be able to upgrade to this pump before their warranty has expired for a small fee. I am so excited for this to come out because I can’t wait to get my current infusion sites off my mid section without having 10 feet of tubing run under my clothes to a different location.

Since Medtronic controls 70% plus of the pump market you can bet whatever they put out for a new pump is going to be something nice. There is a lot of good competition out there and they need to stay on their toes.

Dave-I really like the statement Omnipod killer!!!

Very exciting news from both Dave and Dave.
Looking forward to hearing more about both new models (Patch Pump is especially intriguing!!).

It would make sense that some time in July-August, not only Medtronic but most companies that make insulin pumps and glucose meters will be coming out with new products and/or announcements, since the ADA Sessions conference takes place (in New Orleans) in early July and that is a venue where new product announcements tend to be made.

R u guessing/dreaming about these design concepts (which do sound sensible) or do you have some kind of inside info?

Non disposable patch pumps would bre great for some. Here in Australia the way pumps are covered make the current Omnipod unviable. Here, private insurance covers the initial outlay for the pump, and then a government scheme covers the consumables and insulin.

Look forward to see the new MM… anyone has pictures???

Yes I have some inside info so I am not totally dreaming. The removable insulin cartridge makes me think that it will not be disposable along with the fact that if you can bolus from the pump with out the remote control device then there must be a screen of some sort so you know how much insulin you are taking. Having a screen makes it sound like a more permanent device than a disposable one.

I heard that there is a new pump coming out (traditional type) that will have smaller basal and bolus abilities, like the Animas.

I have heard about the Tubeless pump as well. I hope it doesn’t have the static issues I had with the Pod.

Either way, can’t wait to see what comes next!

oh I hope !!! i tried the pod and the angle was too steep and got bleeders constantly so I am back on minimed paradigm and silhouettes so I can control the angle of insertion. However, no tubes is awesome! and prefilled cartridges are way overdue!!!

That is a good point but if you are going to be able to boluses from the pump without the controller there must be a screen of some sort, wouldn’t you think?

This is so interesting. I spoke with a MM rep at our local Diabetes Expo last month and I asked if MM was thinking about a patch pump. The first spokesperson deferred to the other guy who seemed like he was higher up in the company and he would not give me any details but that they were “researching it.” I hope it does come out next year. That would be great!

I use the Omnipod. I like the wireless feature. I was told by a Medtronic rep that there will be a “Patchless pump” coming out sometime next year. She said it would have a touch screen similar to the iphone. I told her I am open to any wireless pump but when I needed a pump, the Omnipod was the only one on the market. I love the Omnpod and haven’t had too many issues with it. I can’t wait to see what the “Patchless pump” looks like. Who know’s if there are other options maybe I might switch…

As on omnipod user I am excited about this development.

Competition will be great for the tubeless pump market.

Heres some stuff I found about a patch pump.

Wow!..

As an Australian and a Victorian I feel proud!

Also a bit embarrased that I hadn’t heard this before.

Cheers,

Hi Everyone,

I have some more details about Medtronic’s new pump.

The next one to come to the market is the new Paradigm. The changes are mostly around the CGMS features and very minor in comparison with the changes between the 515/715 and 522/722. The two main new features are predictive alarms and automaric shutdown.

The predictive alarms will allow the pump to alarm is the sensor indicates that you will go low in the near future, based on the CGMS pattern. This feature already exists in the Guardian but not in the Paradigm.

The second one is automatic shutdown, which means that the pump will shutdown itself if you don’t respond to a CGMS hypo alert within a specified period of time.

Seem to be pretty minor changes but in the right direction, hopefully moving towards a closed loop system eventually.

I was also told that this will be the last version of the paradigm system, and that the next pump after that will be a complete new generation. I saw some pictures but they were concepts at this stage.

Anyway, I thought I would share some of what I know.

Cheers,

Henry.-

Thanks Henry!

Hi Dave,

I suppose each of us would like our own version of the pump based on what believe is important.

Unfortunately pump companies design what they think is more appropriate, and profitable…

Maybe when the next generation pump comes we will see more options.

Cheers,

Henry.-

remember, Henry said the two MAIN new features. That means hopefully we’ll get a few more small ones in there like IOB on the main screen. Lets keep our fingers crossed!
