Newly diagnosed....what can i have at a coffee shop?

Hey everyone. Thanks for all the kind welcomes. Much appreciated! I recently found out I am pre-diabetic. I have alot of business meetings at coffee shops and in the past have had a little bit of everything…frachinos, lattes, you name it. I havent met with the nurtrionist yet and have two meetings at coffee shops next week. What can a diabetic have at a coffee shop (with the exception of straight black coffee…yuck).

Thanks for any advice!
Shannon

As a type 1, I can have ANYTHING I want, in moderation and as long as I cover it with the proper amount of insulin.

As a prediabetic, I am not too sure on how that would work :frowning:

Here I am just about to go and make an espresso - and you’ve got me stumped - with you being a pre-diabetic. I guess your best bet since you don’t like black coffee (double yuck on that one - I’ve gotta have cream to keep my clothing fitting me - that’s my excuse) - well - I guess just a plain old coffee with abit of cream and artificial sweetner - if you need sweetner that is. I take insulin - so have always used raw sugar in my coffee - but if you’re trying to avoid becoming dependent on legal drugs to control your blood sugars - maybe avoid the sugar (do you have to use a BG meter?). As far as something for dipping into that beverage - I know biscotti’s are not that high in sugar - but it depends on what the coffee shop offers for nibbles. I’d say just try to not overdue it with sweet things - say for example - in a donut shop - the little mini donut holes might be a safe bet - just nothing with lots of sugar / fillings - or if you do have them - just let one satisfy you - that’s what I do (okay - maybe I have two - the evil twin keeps on talking to me in my left ear). Hopefully others come up with more helpful ideas then I have here . Hmmm, wonder if there is a website out there in Cyberland that has a list of low sugar / healthy pre-diabetic treats (even might be something here at Tudiabetes land).

Wait - just found this website on Low Carbing at the Coffee House - hopefully this will help you in finding answers (I know it did for me).

Thanks for your advice. Anna, That site (the low carbing at the coffee house) is AWESOME! thank you!

Try the tea’s. I go with hot peach tea, usually in the tea bags jars up front. I love the tea’s and one really good thing is that all the flavors are refillable, just get a new cup of water and a new tea bag. i also suggest, that most places have diet coke. But the tea with one pink packet is my drink of choice.

i dunno, can you get coffee flavored coffee with a little milk in a coffee shop anymore?! =) one caution, even black coffee can raise your insulin resistance, causing a bit of high sugar. I use insulin, so i’t no prob for me to cover it with a lil more, it better not be a prob, I would die without my morning coffee.

Iced or hot green tea, black tea, or herbal tea. Ask for their sugarfree flavors. You can always get coffee over ice or hot and add cream or milk and a sugarfree flavor. A small sugarfree latte or coffee with steamed milk isn’t too high in carbs. If black coffee or an Americano is too strong, ask them to add some hot water to it. Most coffeeshops have artificial sweeteners like splenda and equal. Sprinkled cinnamon adds some good flavor too. Oh yes, and breves seem good because they are lower in carb but they are very high in fat and calories.

just a little, and for me it’s only about an hour or so. :’( no worries if you take insulin you can cover it. lots and lots of us have minor increases in blood sugar after a coffee, even black coffee (zero carbs, zero fat) - let your reaction be your own experiment, just test after coffee with no other carbs and it’ll tell you if there is a difference. oh yea, (for me) after lunch coffee has no effect at all… it’s just the AM

at starbucks I always have their cafe americano (I think thats it?..) its pretty much coffee+expresso, or their iced coffee. I ask them to leave room at the top so I can add splenda and cinnimon seasoning

My Starbucks staple is caffe Americano, often with a sugar-free flavored syrup (they have cinnamon, vanilla, hazelnut, and caramel), and room for cream – I use half-and-half, which is lower in carbs for the same volume than milk.

If I’m feeling indulgent and have leeway in the amount of carbs I allow myself, then I sometimes get a sugar-free Cinnamon Dolce latte – it’s got about 1g carb per ounce (so 12g for the 12oz size, etc) from the milk, so it fits in pretty well if you’re not on a very strict diet (my personal limits are 50g carbs per day, and not more 25g carbs in any one meal, with few exceptions).

thanks everyone…your ideas are wonderful. I never expected this much response. What a nice community this is!

Thanks again!!!
