So I’ve spent the past few years just really acting like I’m not a diabetic, my blood sugars have just ran in the 300s for a while. The past two or three weeks I’ve been doing things by the book, really really taking care of myself but now it’s like my body just needs time to get used to being in a normal range, because I’m nauseas allll the time lately. Anyone else experience anything like this?
Hi Raven,
Yes, pushing yourself down into normal range after being chronically high for months or years can result in something called "false hypoglycemia". It's very common, and when I "found religion" and started getting my BG under control, I suffered through it.
Coming down from chronic 300s will make you feel hypo at 150-200 if you're sensitive to it. Most doctors will have you come down gradually over several weeks, setting decreasing targets over that time. For example, shoot for 220 the first week, 180 the second, 140 the third, 100 fourth, etc.
The reaction is completely benign. It causes no "damage". It's simply uncomfortable, and can make you feel sick. At your age, titrating down slowly is no concern -- you aren't in serious D-damage territory yet (you haven't lived long enough :-)). So my recommendation would be to back off, and bring yourself down gradually over several weeks.
OTOH, if you've got some hardcore commando in you, slam it down to normal, keep it there, and tough it out. That's what I did 'cause I didn't want to wait a month to have normal BG. Took me about a week total to adapt to the new BG levels, the worst of it the first 2-3 days.
Thanks dave! Exactly what I thought. Good to hear it’ll get better eventually. I think I’ll definitely tough it out
Hi Raven! I was in a very long denial state when I was diagnosed in 2007. I wish someone would have told me you would feel bad before you feel any better. My blood sugars have been consistently in the 200s-300s for a very long time, but I have decided it was time to take control. It hasn't been easy but I am trying! I hope everything has started to normalize for you :)
